you all need to move away from the my income / her income thing. Pay off het debt and work towards being happy. Money sucks! Oh, and by the way x+20,000$ is really nothing of a difference. When you are old and broken down from a life of manual labor, she can carry you for a change. The really big picture is what matters most.

It will all become clear as you age and gain experience in life. After the first three times you have a vehicle get wrecked (regardless of who's fault), you will discover what a piss-poor investment they are for your money.

You will learn to only use the dollars needed to get you from point a to b and meet your minimum necessities for whatever your chosen lifestyle requires. Then later, if you get to point you have extra money to spare, and won't break the bank if you lose it, then feel free to spend on toys.

As an example, I once went into Sears and bought a brand new Husqvarna chainsaw. I then walked over to the jewelry department and purchased a set of diamond earrings of a matching price to the chainsaw. I was in the front yard getting the Husky ready for it's first run when my wife came home. She saw the chainsaw and before she could say anything, I presented the earrings to her. I never heard a word about the chainsaw...
