What is normal on a 6 speed shifter idk how loose the free play should be, like i could be in 5th gear and it will still move left to right tremendously and when im wheelin it will pop out of gear ?? is it just me ? or is there some grommit, spring , bushing that i dont know about thats worn out because i plan on installing the urd short throw shifter on it but i want to get rid of the loose play shifter first any ideas ???

There is a rubber isolater in the shifter that gets worn that could be the problem. Member Coupe has a good write up on how he fixes em either on here or xru.

Everyone loves the URD short shifter. Taking it all apart to install will give you an excuse to nose around and see whats loose. I know AFTER install if you don't use loctite things can rattle loose and have a little play. As far as BEFORE with your stock shifter, I'm assuming it could be a similar issue but when I had mine all apart I didn't really pay attention to what could cause that. . .

Shifter is two pieces sandwiched together, so over time it can become worn. You won't know until you take off the console to look at the base. If the base stays still it's time to fix it, or a new shifter as it is sold as one piece. If the base moves you probably need a new plastic bushing. Marlin Crawler sells them cheap.
