So i was thinking about painting my engine cover for "S's and G's" I have some color match duplicolor to do the front emblem and figured why not do more? one guy on here "dalesrn" did his and it looks pretty nice, even though its something few people would ever see. question is do i need a primer coat in order to make the duplicolor blue stick to the plastic cover? i do have some black krylon for plastic would that work as a primer coat? sorry for the newb questions I dwelve more into the wood working than the auto modding as a hobby. just started into this stuff after stumbling onto this forum. love this thing!

Good question. I would email/PM the guy ("dalesrn") you say has this done. Better to get the answer from the horses mouth as it were.

I used primer and clear coat when I did mine.
I probably wouldn't use black as primer, but that may be just me.

Yes, you do need a primer or adhesion promoter when you paint plastic. I have never used the Krylon Plastic paint, but from what I have heard it works good. However, I would rather use a real dedicated primer rather than a paint that kinda acts as a primer.

x2. If you find the right color with Krylon Fusion, you don't need a primer for use on plastic however I wouldn't use Krylon Fusion as a primer.

I used the Duplicolor color match and did not use a primer on the first coat. Let's just say that that coat was sanded down then an adhesion promoter was added. Do yourself a favor and do it right the first time :D

It was very difficult to find a silver paint that said it would bond to plastic. I went to Home Depot and found a rim/hubcap paint that worked awesome. I did not have to sand. Only prep work was to clean and tape what I did not want painted. No primer was recommended, I did it without primer. Still looks awesome without chipping.
