    I don't think there are many factors to this as you suggest. The main issue is market conditions and their ability to mark up prices. Canada has 10 percent the population as the US, therefore on sheer sales numbers alone, companies don't profit as much.

    As for the regulations on new cars mentioned by 49ers, each state has different policies.
    I agree getting a car imported from bellingham is virtually impossible. Many states provide temporary registration. You get this, and ICBC temporary insurance and you are good to go. Proof of residence not so much. Proof of a US address is key. Toyota punishes dealers in the states, so there are state laws that protect the individual dealerships.
    Florida and Colorado are examples. Pick your state and dealership wisely. It can be done though.
    I personally know several people who have bought new vehicles and imported them within the first week. I also went through the importation process and my dealership would sell me a car to export regardless of residence. The issue they said was anywhere near the border, those dealers were targeted by corporate.

    *you will have to pay state tax though
