Well I have sloooowly been building my first AR. Main use is for plinking in the desert and maybe coyote/pig blasting, but would still like it to be a decent set-up incase SHTF. Oh yeah it's going to be 5.56.

So far I have a Black Weapons Armory lower, Vltor upper, BCM BCG, and a Vltor/BCM CH.

I have on order a DD buffer tube, magpul MOE grip with hogue sleeve, enhanced trigger guard, and a magpul acs-l stock.

Been looking into barrels and with the help of Josh (OuTkAsT) I have narrowed it down to a Rainier Arms CHF mid-length 14.5" LW 1:7 barrel for $270. I was thinking about the same specs in their "select" barrels for $175, but the extra $95 bucks for a CHF, chrome-lined barrel with a low profile gas block seems to be a no-brainer.

I want to get a YHM free float diamond rail that i found for $106 shipped, but I am not sure which size end cap of theirs I need to get. Also looking into getting YHMs 5c2 flash/comp.

Other than that I still need the basics like lower parts kit and what not.

Let me know what you guys think or suggest as this is my first build and I am a noob to a senmi automatic rifle of this sort!

I will post pics of what I currently have and more when things get delivered.

    1) it isn't an assault rifle..

    2) a LPK from DPMS should be good, and can be found for cheap... that's if a standard trigger is all you need...

+1 on it being a "rifle"... assault rifles are select fire/automatic.

And you are definitely headed towards a quality build.
I'm not a BCM fanboi, but there is nothing wrong with their products, and I really do like Vltor.
You've got a great start there.

Yeah totally makes sense about the assault rifle. Wasn't trying to be or sound like a dick in my previous post; thanks for the correction to both of you and I fixed it in the OP.

I just got the bcm cause it had awesome reviews, fast shipping, supposed great customer service, and it was actually in stock. I only got the vltor upper cause it's a local company.

I don't know if I should order a complete lower parts kit or just order whatever pieces I need from del-ton.

I recently installed a Spike's Tactical battle trigger on my AR. Very good price and extremely smooth for a combat trigger (not to mention good looks, if that's important to you). Also, the Spike's Heavy ST-T1 buffer is worth the money. It actually reduces muzzle jump.

    I'm not a big fan of Del-Ton.

Also, I've had issues with Stag LPKs, and a number of friends also had issues. Assuming it was a bad production batch from 2010, they might be okay... the particular issue could lead to a full-auto mag dump.
Also had a problem with a TDS kit (beautiful stainless parts). The hammer was not properly machined and it didn't allow proper engagement of the disconnector. Fucking thing would have ended up with severe trigger slap, likely leading to bump-firing, had I not don a proper function check. I kept the trigger on my 20" build but trashed the hammer.
DPMS kits have mixed reviews, but the one consistent thing I'm reading, as dumb as it sounds, is that the roll pins are harder to install than other kits.

Personally, I'm running RRA LPKs in all 3 of my builds and have not had any problems. One is running a Daniel Defense BCG, one is running a Stag upper/BCG, and the other is running a CMMG Evolution AR22 upper (dedicated, not a conversion, it won't chamber 5.56).

Just make sure the disconnector spring is properly oriented. When you insert it into the slot in the trigger casting, the fat end of the spring goes in first.
Reverse it and it'll likely dump the mag.

Ergos are nice, but I prefer my CAA's.
Running them on 2 of my 3 builds.

    Bullet button.

Legally, that is a fixed magazine.
If you look at the sides of the mag, it is also blocked to 10 rounds.

I do have a detachable mag 20" that I can legally run 30 rounders in.

Nice to see there are ways to get around nazi California rules. Is that black monstrosity what the socialists want ar15's to look like? But they can look like that camo one?

The California semiautomatic rifle ban is actually pretty simple.

First, there are two lists of banned receivers.
If your lower is on either of the lists (1989 and 1999), do not pass go, go directly to jail.

If not, then it is an off-list receiver. In that case, SB23 applies:

An "Assault weapon" is defined as a centerfire semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine and any of the following:
    Pistol grip
    Forward vertical grip
    Flash hider
    Telescoping or folding buttstock
    Grenade launcher

An "Assault weapon" is defined as a centerfire semiautomatic rifle with a fixed magazine of a capacity greater than 10 rounds
An "Assault weapon" is defined as a centerfire semiautomatic rifle with an overall length of less than 30" (when in operable condition, the KelTec SU16 is legal because the fire control group separates from the rifle and can not be fired when folded).

So the camo example, since it has a fixed magazine, is only bound by:
    10 round limit
    OAL 30" or greater

The black one is "featureless". It has none of the SB23 "evil features" listed above. Fixed stock, "Monte Carlo" style grip, and a muzzle compensator. It can have a detachable magazine, and can legally be fitted with 30rd magazines that I am in lawful possession of.

Hmmm. Looks like I lucked out and ordered the last barrel they had and it says it's all packaged and ready to be shipped. It isn't even on their site anymore.

Gonna have to shop a bit more for a LPK. Spikes for 70 and RRA for 65 is what I've found so far.

Just got off the phone with Rainier and he said I ordered the last chf barrel and that they are no longer selling them; only going to be putting them on their complete rifles they sell. I lucked out!
