I just purchased an '02 Taco used from a dealer. It has a nasty smell in it that the salespeople "claimed" they didn't notice. It was rank and they were full of crap.

Anyhow, I got the truck home and the the floor on the passenger side was wet. I pulled the bench seat and pulled the carpet out only to find brown stanky liquid underneath. I douched the entire cabin and it involved peeling out the floor liners that reside under the carpet itself. It appears that normally the floor liners are heavily glued to the metal floor, but b/c of the moisture it was easy to peel them off in almost entire pieces. I didn't put any of the interior back in so I could drive the vehicle for a few days and rule out any possible leakage from anywhere. The delaership says the water must be from when they "Cleaned" the interior. Sweet cleaning job guys.

The dealer called me to get the car back to get state inspected and they failed the thing.
    1. The airbag light was on. That was b/c I had disconnected the passenger side on/off switch on the dash to get behind the paneling. I rolled into the dealership, got in the truck, plugged the switch back in and the light was off in about 60 seconds of me pulling into the lot. Resolved.
    2. A second box was checked off for FAIL claiming "Other". The only other thing that was possibly wrong was that I had pulled the carpet that the floor liners. I haven't talked to the inspection guy yet but will do so on Monday.

By Monday the stereo will be back in and the entire center panel will be back in as normal. The only issue is this damn funky carpet which I still need to get clean and the floor liners which need to be trashed.

What are the liners for? Fire barrier (heat shield)? Acoustics (road noise)?
Are they even called floor liners?
I'm not sure that the liners are the actual inspection issue but I'd like to know their purpose and their proper name b/c I can't seem to find any info on them.

    Thanks.

    J
