Workaround for In-Car Stereo

So I've been in the market for some louder speakers (not necessarily a subwoofer) for the tacoma and so an amp has been in the back of my mind. I was thinking about getting the most use out of the truck and had an idea before going and buying an amplifier.

Would it be possible to wire a power inverter directly from the battery and plug in a (small) home theater reciever to power the speakers, assuming all the wattages, amps, etc matched up. Then just getting music from the radio rather than going through the HU which I want to avoid doing (do not have JBL HU).

I was thinking this would give the truck more uses with the AC outlet in the truck for those lacking the bed outlet.

Specifically, I have:
375 Watt Power Inverter
Home theater receiver w/ 180 Watt input

Thoughts?

 

I don't think using a home theater system in a truck is a good idea. Home theater systems are optimized for a theater-like experience for watching movies. Music is best amplified with a car audio amplifier. Car amplifiers are also much smaller and easier to conceal.

 

Yes, you could do that, and it could possibly sound good. An amplifier is an amplifier.

why would it be easier to:

1) install a inverter (item 1) a home theater receiver (item 2) and then use a line out converter (item 3) on your stock head unit to get sound to the receiver, or set up a new antenna in your car for the HT receiver, then either wire the outputs from your HT receiver back to the speaker wires in the harness behind the head unit, or run new speaker wires.

or

2) buying a new head unit and connecting it

3) running a LOC from your head unit to the amp, then speaker wires back from the amp to the speaker wires for the truck (or running new wires).

 

You have a point there. I guess I'm looking for more of a tailgating type deal and just planned on running the speaker wire out to the bed and setting up speakers when i needed them.. not on all the time kind of thing and definitely not while driving or anything... I dont think

 

Ahh, whole different ball game. In those cases, a cheap "boom box" and the inverter are your ticket. Be cautious with your time frame on battery only, or make sure you have a deep cycle battery.
