Really dissapointed in the past 5 years I've owned my 05 Tacoma dc I've had to rebuild the rear axle 3 times last time was a month ago. Hop in the truck for a 800 mile trip from home an 5 hours into the trip rear end starts howling like a beast. If anyone has insure to y I keep havin this problem please help I really can't afford to keep rebuilding it so it coming to the point of trading In my most favorite vehicle ever.

This shouldn't be happening. You may be getting the bearing preload or the backlash set incorrectly.

This ^^^ Just because he had the specs doesn't mean that he did it correctly.

    Get another mechanic.

    This would be my vote.

I believe you can buy the entire differential assembly already together from Toyota. As long as the axle housing isn't bent, a new diff assembly and some fresh wheel bearings and seals should make the rear axle just like a new one.

Diff work is something that requires precision. Not many people do it right. I've taken a class on how to do it the right way, and it's complicated and time consuming. I've seen guys change gears using an impact wrench on all the bolts involved, no torque wrench used. Then they "break in" the gears by doing a burn out in the parking lot. I've never seen anyone using proper measuring equipment to set clearances either. I am sure there are people out there who do it right, but I would bite the bullet and buy a new diff assembly. That way it's ALMOST idiot proof.

Please no. New diffs from Toyota, they run like two grand.

A rebuilt diff from ECGS after core charge is around $600 to $700 and you get better quality gears. The quality of Toyota's stock gears in these trucks is unimpressive.

OP, depending on your trim level (e-locker or no):

Gear setup is not easy and requires patience and precision...a little education:

Sounds like a much better option.

My main point was take the gear setup out of the hands of the guys who are doing everything, not specializing in gears. There are definitely guys who can do everything well, including gears, but how would OP know who they are? Current mechanic is certainly out.

If I had my rearend rebuilt by a shop and a month later it started howling, you can bet your ass my truck would be back at that shop for some warranty work. Why isn't this a warranty repair?

I prefer not to return to shops that screw up work so they can screw up again. I kind of get where the OP is coming from.

One of the hardest things in life is finding an honest, good mechanic. I had one in my old town, wish I could've taken him with me when I moved.
