I would have just eaten the chile off the knife that was used as a can opener. I love using knives as forks...it's so dangerous and manly! :)

I just went camping and should have taken a pic of the marshmallow fire holders I had to make for the smores....I had to find sticks with a split in the end so I could slide a fork into it. I made 2 and wish I took a pic..dammit! They worked but weren't half as cool as the ones pictured earlier in this thread.

you didnt just use the stick? I always just use a piece of green wood (like alder) to roast my hot dogs or marshmallows...

Anyone ever use a pie iron? http://www.firepies.com/irons.html I love those things. get some pie filling in a can and put it between bread.. camp pie :woot:

I can't seem to find a good one anymore.. the handles always break off... i once used one to heat a rock which i then put in my coffee to keep it warm! just don't let it fall into your teeth!

A separate occasion i forgot my fly tackle, so i pulled some fur off my dog and tied it to a hook to make a fly. Worked well enough to catch dinner.

this was on my first backpacking trip ever. This was the flattest place we could find to set up the tent. It was about 10 degrees that whole weekend. The first night we slept, we kept falling down to the bottom of the tent and freezing our asses off. So the next day we got wise, built a frame out of old wood and tossed a bunch of evergreen bows down to level out the terrain a little to put the tent on. We also dug out little nooks in the hill side with some rocks so we could sit level and not scoot down the hill.

edit: that is my dads friend and I am pretty sure that he is holding that log that is conveniently in line with his dick in his other hand. lol

Anyone have a cleaver idea for an alternative to a fire? Something that will bring friends to huddle around, keep you warm, light up the area, ability to cook smores, smell good and make you feel relaxed. Looks like no open fires, even in designated pits, in Colorado this summer.

Fire restrictions always put a major damper on a good camping trip. I always bring my smoker and plenty of meat to make Jerky and other stuff to smoke. We love smelling the smoker while hanging out. You can always wait till the ranger is done with is rounds since they usually don't come out at night (if your far enough into the hills) and make a real small one but the risks and the paranoia will take the fun out of it. You'll sit and watch every ember that rises into the air and get so worried about starting a fire you'll probably just snuff it out and find something else to occupy your time.

I myself can metal detect from sunrise to sundown. I lay all my findings (mostly coins, bullets & bullet casings) out in segregated sections then bag it and bury it until next trip. Then I dig it up, look at the stuff I buried on the last trip and enjoy my memories, and add to the pile. I enter the burial spot into our camping diary that we bring and both try to write in. Always fun to read about old trips on current trips.

Yes. I use a Mr. Heater. I backpacked it into the bottom of the Grand Canyon and have used it in Death Valley and all sorts of places where I can't legally make fire. It's light, portable, and runs on 1lb propane bottles. You can even cook on it if you want to.

I came up with something we simply call the rope. I got tired of trying to squat in the woods trying to drop a deuce and not dropping a spike into my pants. Leaning against a tree is fine until you try to stand yourself up without shuffling one of your feet into your pile.

The Rope is... well... an length of rope. It has a carabiner on each end and a piece of foam pipe insulation or hollow pool noodle threaded onto it. You also thread the toilet paper onto the rope so they are always together.

Basicly when it's time to drop anchor you find a sturdy tree, put the insulation across you back, swing the rope around around the tree and clip the biners together. Then you lean back and do you stuff. When you are finished you can use the rope to pull yourself to the standing position.

The only problem is the women around camp get horrified whenever someone heads to the woods with the rope over their shoulder.

Sub'd. Great thread idea. Always looking for new ideas and solutions I can use.

By the way, it's MacGyver - not Mc Giever or similar misspellings.

MacGyver, pffft.... I Mick Guyvur the shit out of everything.

Once, I found an old frog spear head in my buddy's tackle box but the original rigging system was broken. So I just carved some notches in a long stick and lashed it on with some 550 cord. Worked great! I even managed to spear a huge carp that happened to be just chillin in the shallows. Now I take it on every fishing trip "just in case". Works awesome at the boat docks too lol

When I was younger (a kid), used to chase (hand catch) Smallmouth Bass in an ice-cold Kentucky stream near my grandparents house. That fun ended when I finally caught pneumonia, was rushed to the hospital in a coma lasting three days, followed by a hospital stay lasting another two weeks. Hospital food and a mean nurse will break anyone (especially a kid) of any desire to get sick ever again. Now, it's a boat and, like you, either a spear or net.

I went camping last night, and obviously needed coffee this morning, and found my normal household coffee maker plugged into the outlet in the bed worked, but it was slower, and I had to reset it twice for a full pot.

how do you guys do camp coffee? I want a way to make it quick for hunting trips too.

    I use one of these - http://www.amazon.com/Optimus-Light...804003&sr=1-2&keywords=optimus+portable+stove

    with this - http://www.amazon.com/Stansport-Ano...=1341803893&sr=1-3&keywords=stansport+cookset

A bottle of water and then some folgers instant coffee teabag lookin things. works awesome and its small enough to stash in a backpack and forget about till I want coffee. and as much of a coffee snob as I am, there's not much better than a nice cup of folgers instant when you're deep in the woods enjoying the morning chill.

Actually, absent a campfire or similar, a 12v coffee maker, plugged into a regular 12v lighter/accessory outlet, works better. A 120v coffee maker simply draws too much power for the small inverter powering the bed's outlet.
