I bought my 2009 Tacoma with 27k on it at the beginning of this year. When I took it in for the first oil change, they charged me $50 bucks and upon reviewing my receipt it read "customer requests synthetic blend oil change"... Well, I never requested anything synthetic. I simply requested a standard oil change. I wasn't too worried about it, but the next time I took it in for the next oil change I asked them about it. They claimed the synthetic blend is standard for my truck and that is what they use unless otherwise requested. I asked if it has always had the synthetic blend and they said they don't know because the previous maintanence was done at a different Toyota dealer and all the records show are just the oil change.

Anywho, I'm about to hit 40k and its about time for another oil change. I am contemplating going to full synthetic mobil 1 and just doing the oil changes myself. Should I be ok to do that at 40K, or should I just stick with the "synthetic blend".

BTW - It is Castrol Synthetic Blend that the dealership is using.

    Thanks for any help.

You'll be fine using M1 fully synthetic. Go to walmart and get the 5 quart jug for $26, plus the quart for $7 b/c the engine takes 5.5 quarts.

Go get a toyota OEM filter from the dealership with the coupon they send you in the mail for $4.

DIY oil change for $37 and its done the way you want it. :D

Billies 5100's front set to 1.75 plus 1/4 taco lean spacer. Rears Billies plus AAL for a 2" leaf. 265/75/16 BGF's. Double din Kenwood stereo w/bluetooth and steering wheel controls and JBL speakers front & rear. Heavy duty battery. Billet grill blacked out. K&N air filter and MBRP cat-back. Just tuned it up new plugs and new front brake pads. Steel powered coated tailgate cap. Billet Grill painted black & factory roof racks. Oh new head lights thanks to toyota.
I agree about the Mobile1 full synthetic. However I go to either advanced or autozone and get the special 5 qts plus M1 filter about the same price $34. I like the M1 filter better.

PS The synthetic blend is a high milage oil. Never heard of putting it in a low milage car or truck. But I guess it would not hurt.

Few years back my F-150 I bought new used a 5-20 Syn Blend as did my Fusion I drove. Both were bought new off the lot.

My Tacoma gets M1 5-30 even though it came with Penzoil 10-30:eek: from the stealership I bought it used from.

Use what you can afford. Doing it yoursef is much cheaper plus it gets you uder the hood learning your engine bay and the trucks in and outs. Dont forget to grease the drive shaft and rotate the tires!! (Sorry, used to work a lube rack for a chevy dealer:rolleyes:)

Just use basic 5W-30 non-synthetic from a reputable brand and change it at the interval in the owner's manual. Everything else is a overkill for a truck that will probably rust out after 15 years.
