OK....I may be over-worrying, but here goes.

We got rain in SoCal for the first time in months, so I wanted to take the Taco out for some mudding. This was the first time I've taken it out into the mud puddles since I bought it. It was A BLAST....puddles were only about 1.5-2 feet deep at the most and 5-20 feet long. and just muddy water. My whole truck was covered in silt and dirty water. Did a few runs in 2hi and 4hi.

After getting back on the road to head home, I noticed around 30 mph I start to get a very faint humming/whirring sound from what sounds like the front of the truck. Can only hear it if the radio and cabin fan is off with the windows up. Pretty much needs to be silent in the cab. But here's the catch.......it speeds up and gets higher pitched as I slow down. At about 5mph and under, it either goes away or goes supersonic because I can't hear it anymore. It's inversely related to speed. It does this regardless of using the brakes or not...I tried coasting to a stop and still heard it.

Any ideas? Mud in the driveline somewhere? My mechanic buddy said it could be the bearings, but I thought bearings make an overall humming noise with the speed of the vehicle. I'm going to wash off the hub and wheels tomorrow, hoping it's just some silt in there.

Totally not fair...I see you guys doing stuff like this all the time and first time I go for it something happens to the truck :(

does it make the noise if the engine is running and the vehicle is not moving?

Could have gotten some debris into your idler pulley causing the noise.

But that would make it RPM related...the sound I'm hearing only varies with speed.

My bet is a (or multiple) small rock is hung in the calliper somewhere and its rubbing against the rotor or wheel.

I use to have that happen on a ranger I had LONG ago.

But this is just a guess, something to check out real easy.

    Good Luck!

    Something stuck in your brakes?

Weeds tied up in the drive line?

    Calipers sticking?

I'd take off the tires and inspect everything.

Something must be stuck in a rotating assembly. Check your tires, brakes, inner fender wells, drive shafts, etc... Those are the things that increase rotation when they increase with speed.

I had a buddy put a zip strip on my cv axle that made the sound you are descibing. Took me a few days to figure it out/exactly where it was coming from. You don't hang out with any pranksters do you?

That's what I was thinking. Obviously some mud and dirt got into something in that engine bay. Running through mud holes for a hoot 5 times here and several times there isn't a good idea. You run through them slow so you don't get these kind of problems.

That may be it. I've had that happen before also.

    Thanks for the responses

I lifted the truck on both sides, rinsed off everything on the front brake assembly and hub, rinsed off the engine bay, and let everything dry. Took it for a test drive and the noise was gone...Must have just been some rocks or silt piled up on the brakes somewhere.

    Thanks again for the help.
