Im changing the leaking water pump on my 2006 4 cyl Tacoma with a whopping 17,068 miles on it. The book say 8.7 qts. All I can get out is about 3.7. I figured Id change the coolant any way so I flushed it with distilled water. Got about the same amount. My question is there a block drain you can remove , otherwise when I fill it back up with the new 50/50 its going to be not able to handle the Montana winter temps ? In retrospect I should have just left the old coolant the block but I didnt. Wouldnt be a problem if the stuff wasnt 50/50 premix, I could just add more coolant. What a hose job this premix crap is. Yes, the heater was on and I got it up to normal temp With the thermostat open. I looked but didnt see any drain plugs

Unless you drained the block a gallon sounds about right. A lot is stored in there.

When I ever re-fill a vehicle with coolant after work I usually just check it at the end of every day and add more to the reservoir as needed. If it is empty when the engine is hot it will need more.

This was the process I followed when I put my S/C in and had to drain the coolant. I put about a gallon in and after driving each day I topped off the reservoir after parking for the night. Took about a week to get it full to the point where it wasn't draining the reservoir.

The problem is the distilled water in the block left from flushing it mixed with 50/50 antifreeze isnt going to give me the cold weather protection I need in Montana. I need to drain the block if possable or get it out somehow.

Drain is right above the passenger side motor moount, put a piece of 5/16 hose on the drain and loosen a brass nut with a 10mm socket. You only get about 3.5 qts out of it and about another pint when you remove the water pump. Toyota has some very string people tightening all the bolts from the factory. The loktited nuts to remove the fan are a real treat. Ill let you guys figure that one out, being as no one jumped in here to help me. Hope this helps someone in the future
