Adding more insulation to attic

It is compacted some. 2x4 walls. I wish they were 2x6 for the extra insulation value. Back when these houses and most around here were built they didn't build any with 2x6 walls.

 

Ok I'm with you now. I'll check and see about the wall temps. No HOA here. I wouldn't live where there is one. My house I do what I want with it. If I want to paint it pink to piss off the neighbor I ought to have the right to do so. Roof was just replaced about 3-4 yrs ago. So changing the shingles right now isn't an option. I thought about the lighter color then but went with what would look best instead of the smart thing and it also wasn't as hot then as it is getting now.

 

Yup got it under the Hardi plank siding. But it's 1/2" with the silver lining on top of it.

I know the soffit vents are open I just replaced all the soffits and vents about 2 yrs ago. Most of the vents were painted over and a lot of air flow was cut off with previous owner and her painting skills.

I'll try blocking the Gables and see what happens. Think I should try that before adding insulation to see what happens?

should be able to block them off with from inside the attic with a piece of OSB.

 

To throw something else in there....the house has a cathedral ceiling in the center of the house where the living room is. If I remember right it has roll type insulation in it. On the side walls in the attic part I don't remember seeing insulation at all against them. I should probably add some there to help separate the wall and attic, right? The cathedral also comes within 2 ft of the roof. What could I do there to improve the insulation? Pull whats in there out and put higher R value or do you not use any blow in type on that type of ceiling area?

If the wall seperates the attic area from living space , then yes , it should be insulated

 

Not that bad early in the morning. I used to hang crown moulding in skylights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day. Stay hydrated and take breaks often.

 

That is better than no exterior foam , and the silver foil helps reflect the heat away from the frame

 

meh, crawling in attics sucks regardless. wouldn't take more than 10 minutes, assuming there's adequate head room.

 

It does. That's what I was thinking. I noticed a place of the wall up towards the ceiling where you could make out the faint outline of the wall studs on one wall and kinda figured then that's what was causing it.

 

Yeah you can almost stand up in there.

 

It's interesting you say that because I had a similar situation in a building I constructed , the insulator forgot to insulate the wall that seperated the vaulted room from the attic and in winter we were getting huge ( 8' long ) icicles from snow melt refreezing , and I knew we had to have some heat getting into the attic somehow , turns out it was the portion of wall you describe

 

I had just remembered when I ran the surround system wires to the speakers that there wasn't insulation where I ran the wire through the wall to the speaker at the ceiling. I wouldn't have thought about that up there till you said that. lol

 

So it looks like try blocking the gable vents and see how that works and then consider insulation or go with both?

Also, what R value should I be looking at achieving with the current 100 degree or just under days? Also considering mild winters that may get to the teens a couple of days a year.

 

block off the gable vents and insulate the walls of the cathedral ceiling first, see what difference that makes before adding insulation.
