Anybody out there know anything about refigerator repair?

My freezer is forming ice which is slowly dripping into the fridge part. Otherwise the thing works awesome and I would hate to replace it it. Anyone have any ideas?

Forming ice? It sounds like; The defrost isn't cycling OR the defrost isn't cycling long enough because of an excessive amount of moisture that has been allowed into the freezer OR your drain is clogged so it just stays in the feezer and drips down and then whatever is left refreezes. If there is an excessive amount of ice (probably around the evaporator) use a heat gun/hair dryer to melt it off and and then give it time to cycle through and make sure you hear the defrost click on.

Also pull it away from the wall and check your condenser to make sure you don't have a ton of dust bunnies built up.

sometimes the drain line from up in the freezer section that goes into the pan at the bottom can become frozen. maybe try that? we had that issue a few times in the past with the one in our apartment. maintenance guy came in and unhooked it, ran some warm water through it and good as new.

The ice that is forming seems to be all across the bottom of the freezer not just in one spot. I was planning on pulling it out tomorrow and cleaning all of the old out. I will check the bottom for dust, there is a drain tube that should run down to the bottom?

I dont know that I have ever heard the defroster kick on, what does it sound like?

The thing is only about 5 years old and really does run flawlessly otherwise

It's a pretty distinctive *click* as the compressor turns off and the heating element turns on. It varies by model but probably every couple of hours and you'll hear the water start to drain. Your plan of just clearing all the old ice is probably the easiest rather than sitting around waiting for the defrost to kick on.

Unless the lines get kinked refrigerator/freezers should run for 10+ years since they are hermetically sealed systems. Just cleaned off the condenser and give it plenty of room from the wall to transfer heat properly and you'll be good.
