Im wanting to buy my first taco but can't deside which one I want. I like the more "primitive" RC 4x4, but I can't get over those pretty option packages with 4.0 v6. Help me TW! Your my only hope!

Lower sticker, slightly better MPG, and timing chain.

Shit. I thought the 4.0 had a belt...where did I get that? Was that just the first gen?

It depends what you want and how you will use the truck.

It will mostly be daily driving with light towing, offroading, and little cargo.

I'd go with the v6 personally.

Granted, I've never owned (or driven for that matter) a 2nd gen Taco in 4 cylinder, but I have owned older toyota pickups with 4 bangers, and for me they did not have the power I needed. Driving around town was mostly fine, but I was living in WV at the time and truck really had to work to get up some of the hills at highway speed.

I also would take the AC over the RC because having the extra interior space can really come in handy at times, especially if you're not planning on putting a cover on your bed. It's nice to have an area inside the truck to put bags and such, and I prefer the bucket seats.

Most of those with the 4.0 are just compensating.
Get the 2.7, and get it in access cab. Best of both options.

As per Gelo760, 5-7 mpg (better than 30% improvement on fuel mileage).

PaintDrinkingPete: if the thing still had the 22R, I might agree, but the 2TR has nothing in common, and is about 50% more powerful.

OP: The current 4cyl is 15 hp more powerful than your 95 3.0.

Compensating for your small breast size.

    Exactly right.

We're compensating for the weight in the bed, and the weight being towed behind our trucks.

Where i live is very hilly, that's why I like the v6 option. However, I've always loved the 5-speed and 4 cylinder combo with the classic 22r/e motors. Descisions Descisions. O and another thing, how are the 6-speed with a v6?

    Huh?
I paid $1000 for my 'brick' vehicle, but its purpose doesnt align in any way to my truck. It is, therefore NOT any form of compensation.

As for my decision to buy this, I am in every way totally satisfied with this truck, more so than any other vehicle I've owned, and more than I would be with any other vehicle. It was therefore an excellent decision that has worked out perfectly.

Just loving that 32 miles per gallon overpowered 4-cyl.

Just remember, this is no 22R (112 hp), its a 2TR (165 hp).

Ive heard that the 6-speed is crappy, but its hard to tell since most V6 owners seem to be pussies.

    I just upgraded from a 2011 4cyl 5 speed access cab, to a 2012 V6 Auto Acc Cab TRD.

I didn't do it due to lack of power or towing ability. I loved the 4cyl 5 speed. It ran great.

My only experience is the the 22R, which is why I mentioned I've never driven the current 4 cylinder engine. Good to know.

I saw your profile says Tenn, which is why I mentioned the hills...

I'd probably try to test drive both. Granted, you usually can't get a test drive out on the highway...but you should be able to get a comparison of the power from the 2.7 vs. 4.0L

My current 2012 is a 6-speed v6. I absolutely love it. It could be geared a little better in the high gears, but that's more of a MPG concern than a drive-ability one. The 6 speed in the current models are better than the ones they were making a few years ago, I think. Having said that, my previous Tacoma was an '05 V6 automatic, and that was definitely one of the best automatic transmissions I've ever owned, so I don't think you can go wrong either way if you decide to go with the v6.

^^^ I know he's gone, but just to clear this up. The 6-speed in the '05-'06 years seems to have an issue with a throw out bearing, supposedly it was fixed during the '07 production years.

I use and abuse my 6-spd manny in my '07 with an s/c'd engine, she still works as flawless as day one. Actually better, since I replaced Tranny fluid with synthetic at the 50,000km change over.

I'd recommend the 4 banger for daily driving and off road use. If you plan on lifting it, you will definitely need to regear to get the power back.

The 4.0 would be better if you want to lift it and not lose as much power.

I love my lifted 4 banger. It has plenty of power since it's lifted and regeared. Regearing makes a huge difference, especially with the 4 banger.

And btw, the 5 speed is much more solid than the 6 speed if you get a manual transmission. If you get the 4.0, I would recommend the auto.
