Hey guys, so the other day my girlfriend followed us out a back road and slid off into a ditch to where she tried to drive out of but when this happened the underside of the car started smoking. With that it smelled of Burnt carbon or something like she smoked her breaks. Obviously she wasn't on her breaks so I'm guessing the clutch. After three attempts and smoking it every time I said stop and we winched her out. I have driven this truck a lot after the incident and it seams the the clutch pedal has to hit the floor to start as well as shift and also it is very sluggish while in gear and driving. I don't feel it slipping out of gear and it still has resistance when I go to neutral with out the clutch. What are my options seeing as there is no dealership on this island and if anyone has any suggestions or upgrade ideas please hook me up. Thanks

If she burned it out trying to get it out of the ditch, then I don't think a dealership with cover it out of warranty so I would think that any reputable mechanic should be able to work on it.

What do you want to upgrade?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
If she smoked it three times, that clutch is toast. Changing one doesn't take much if you are mechanically inclined or have a few friends available. Or a trusted local shop can have it done in a day.

I feel I could do it if I had the time and garage, never changed one before but all they are is a basic bolt on swap. I was to upgrade to make it reliable I have heard about different oem and performance kits. All are pretty reasonable. Dealership would do it but we don't have one here. Kinds sucks. Any recommended kits?

Aisin is OEM. That's all I've ever used so I can't suggest an upgrade.

Wait. OEM isn't reliable? Do I have something to worry about?

I recently replaced my clutch in my 2010 5 speed with the stock napa off the shelf clutch for out trucks, works fine, no complaints after about 5,000 miles

OEM uses two suppliers... AISIN (good), and LUK (bad).
There are TSB's out in both the US and Canada for the bad LUK clutches.

In the parts catalog, LUK is called "type A", and AISIN is calles "type B". NEVER install a LUK clutch on a 5 speed Tacoma. They last about 10-15000 miles and start slipping.

If the clutch was burned up getting unstuck, unfortunately that means no warranty, even if it is a LUK.

Thanks for that tip. From what I read last night luk is bad and the other is good. I'm glad I'm not getting mixed answers. She learned her lesson about offloading a stock truck with street tires as over clutching. She's a crazy one now I'm stuck fixing. ;)

No, Aisin is OEM. They make the transmission and some of the clutches (as knucklehead stated). Aisin has been making clutches and trannys for Toyota since the beginning of time.
