the one with the folder is 05-08.

    and 09+ has it covered.

my question is, why is it covered? is there something there that wasn't before?

I never knew the door panels were different. I definitely prefer the older ones.

because the goal of every engineer is to fuck up something that works great. They probably realized it worked too well and needed to "fix" it

Mods are currently being changed .....
I'll guess that the newer ones require less material and/or are easier to make, saving Toyota money. Usually if there is no logical reason to make a change it was probably a result of some potential money saving aspect.
The argument to that theory would be that the molds were already made for the older door panels. Unless the molds only last for so long and once expired, Toyota made the change, to the new ones. Then I stand by my theory.

I recently traded an 2005 for my 2012, and that was one thing I noticed immediately. Funny, I cleaned out my '05, it was mostly receipts that I was pulling out of there.

I think they did it to save money on material but how many would they have to make just to break even paying for the new mold? Like was said before, just something for the engineers to change giving them something to do but it wasn't broke and didn't need fixing. As is the case for the last few years, change is nothing but scary bad fail. Change = uncessary jerkoff waste of shit if it does nothing to improve anything.

I'm trying to find sales numbers by model year and I'm having no luck - but think of the new mold costing say $5,000 ($2,500 per side)

    Toyota Tacoma
    Year U.S. Sales Canadian Sales

    2002 151,960 n/a
    2003 154,154 n/a
    2004 152,933 2836
    2005 168,831 6388
    2006 178,351 9345
    2007 173,238 9477
    2008 144,655 9673
    2009 111,824 9082
    2010 106,198 8111
    2011 110,705 7711
    2012 YTD * 67,153 4608

    (From: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/toyota-tacoma-sales-figures.html)

I marked 2009-2012 red since that's the new door cover style. If we add up both columns (because we love our Northern Neighbours!) to get North American Sales each year we'll get a total of 425,392 trucks sold.

MSRP according to Olathe Toyota for one door panel is $564.76 but that's what someone would pay for it as a part. I'm sure it costs a fraction of this to make.

So I'm thinking 425,392 times 2 (2 front doors per truck) = a lot of doors. And a lot of doors = a big savings in material, which means someone in development may be pissing us off with no extra pocket, but they're sitting pretty with a nice raise in 2008-2009 because they saved Toyota $$$ on material.

    Sorry, long post.

I never use my door moldings anyway. Maybe the reason the tacomas are getting cheaper? From 2011-2012 they dropped almost 4k in price(Canada)

They also moved the speakers in the rear access cab doors to the head liner regardless of JBL or not. Cheaper to make a roof bracket then make a whole molding for a door.
