I have an 05 tacoma that just started making a humming sound that starts around 30mph and gets quite a bit louder at freeway speeds. Its coming from somewhere in the front end, but when turning even slightly to the right there isnt any humming sound at all... only when going straight or to the left. I took out both wheel bearing assemblies but couldn't find anything that would suggest that they were worn out, such as any play or grinding noises. When at freeway speeds I can sometimes feel a slight rumble in the gas pedal, and on the passenger floor. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

with the fron end lifted do you have any wobble? check left/ right and top/bottom. dont get confused as your steering will give and allow you to kick the tire sideways if you really try. also worn tie rod ends will allow a wobble but the humming seems like a wheel bearing dead giveaway

It sounds like a wheel bearing to me. And if you are turning right and it goes away, it is the passenger side bearing. But, just to be sure, because 4wd have the diff bearing issue, when you are going steady and strait down the road, and the rumbling is there, engage the 4wd Hi. If the sound goes away, then you have the diff bearing prob, if the sound remains, then from what you described, sounds to be the passenger wheel bearing. Good luck.

Not necessarily. Could be the inner or outer bearing race causing noise. You can't tell which side bearing it is by the noise. Unless its extremely bad of course.

5100's set at 1.75, 1.5 in. AAL, 265/75/16 Cooper ST tires.
When I had my 07 Tacoma I was deer hunting one day and my abs light came on so I was trying to get back home to check it and couldn't find anything so I drove it some more with the windows down and it started making a humming like sound. Within 50 more miles it turned into a horrible grinding. By the time it started that I jacked it up and the driver side wheel bearing was shot the tire had lots of play in it that was there b4 when I checked out the abs deal. Funny thing two weeks later the passnger side cv joint went out. Always in deer season never fails

So i tried locking in 4wd while going down the road and it seemed like the humming noise was still there... So is this enough information to where I should just go have the passenger side bearing pressed out?
