So I rode around the other day with a buddy that owns a newer Tundra. I'm not sure what year or submodel off the top of my head, but his tailgate had some sort of suppressing device to where if you just popped the latch, the tailgate would slowly lower itself instead of slamming down on the cabes, it's as if there was an actuator or spring on it. He even tried to throw the tailgate open and it caught about half way and slowly lowered untill open again. It was similar to a back hatch on an SUV or something along those lines.

Anyways I was wondering if this is just a Tundra thing, or if this can be modified to fit Tacomas or other trucks as I would like to have this on my truck. Even some general information to what the device is would be helpful. thanks

I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
There's a kit called EZ Down Tailgate Assist or something. There's pics in my gallery. It'll do what you're asking. People tend to get a little bitchy because the cable kinks a tiny bit, but there are pics of that in my gallery too. It's really not that bad once it wears in and after years of use now there isn't the slightest sign of wear. If you just google EZ Down it'll come right up.

Ok, there aren't pics in my gallery but here's the post I put them in.
