    Hey all,
Wanted some opinions on a taco I have been looking at. I will be trading in or selling outright my 98 Prerunner ext cab with about 265k miles, as well as my 04 Jeep Wrangler...I'm tired of paying a payment on this Jeep and continually buying parts for it....it's something everytime I turn around so I am done with the Jeep thing. Here's what I'm looking at:

    -2008 Tacoma Double Cab
    -Speedway Blue
    -TRD Off-Road
-One owner, owned in North Carolina all it's life
-Already has a K&N cold air intake, rough country shocks, a rev-tek spacer lift of some sort, and new pro comp all terrains...285's I think on stock rims.
    -65,874 miles
-Very clean outside and in, brand new looking all around
-currently for sale at a Honda dealership

Dealer had it listed for $25,900 if I remember correctly back in may, then it was dropped to $24,900....now here it is august and the truck is still there to my surprise...they lowered it again to $23,988.

Anything I should look for on this particular year, or anything in general? Is this a good price? Any recalls?

I am not "upside down" in my jeep, but still owe a bit less than $10k. My toyota is in good shape, always babied, it does have a couple of bad spots in the paint. No bigger than a dime. The valve cover gaskets are in need of replacement and it needs new tires.

My uncle told me to see what the dealership would give me on trade in for my truck, if it wasn't enough to sell it outright.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Is this a 4x4 you're looking at?

It doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. NADA is about $26500 for that truck.

This is just my opinion because you asked.
First it is a Toyota at a Honda dealership that is out of oem powertrain warranty.
Anything the Honda dealer is going to sell you will be an aftermarket warranty which I personally do not like.
Even still if they sell a warranty it will be a Honda dealer dealing with a Toyota....

    Second the truck is modified.
Not knowing how it was wheeled or maintained.
Looks can be deceiving. It goes back to my first point.

Third and this is probably what it always comes down to when buying a used Toyota truck at a dealer.
They are priced up at top.
Maybe not trading anything in you can get a killer deal, but usually trading means top dollar for one not so much for the other.
Your Uncles idea to sell outright is good one for it gives you much more negotiating power.

You could get an end of the year model 2012 4x4 for almost the same price.
Granted it may not have the cool wheels or TRD package but still 0 miles, upgraded features and a factory warranty.

My last tacoma I bought as a leftover 2006 4x4 DC auto w/ tow pkg 24500 otd.
Granted this was a while ago but others report here great prices on new trucks.

I wish you the best in what you buy but I personally would not buy a used truck w/ almost 70K for over 22k.
A couple of grand more & you can have a new one.

I appreciate the honest advice. I totally understand the looks being decieving. That's what happened with the jeep I have. Someone wheeled the crap out of it and a dealer cleaned it up and painted the undercarriage and wheel wells satin black. After I bought it I have had nothing but problems.

The speedway blue has by far been my favorite color in these trucks which is one of the reasons I looked at this one. The magnetic gray is my second choice. I totally completely understand the piece of mind that comes with buying a truck brand new but I have yet to see a tacoma here for less than 28k with what I want. That is unfortunately out of my price range. I need a $400 or less payment and I'm really not sure I can get a new one with that payment. I will do a little research and see though. Thanks for the honest opinion.

    back to bone stock.
find a reputable toyota mechanic and get him to do a PPI. probably set you back less than $200, but it would be money well spent. some people like buying modded trucks..because it is stuff they would do anyways. me, i like them stock.

the deal seems decent. you can get them even lower in price i am sure.

    1stgenpre,

I've got a 2007 DCSB 4X4 Sport in excellent (if not better) condition I'm about to trade. It has 77K miles. All maintenance records. I'd be happy to save you some money if you are interested and able to move quickly.

I'd probably take the OE running boards off. The tires are new Michelins (quiet and ride great). Truck has new front brakes and 5100 bilstein shocks (front and rear) and a dealer TSB AAL.

^^ Good idea! Better to buy from someone on TW who seems to care for their truck than a dealer who cares about your money.

Sounds like a good deal man! Getting away from Mopar is probably one of the best decisions you'll make. ;) But in all honesty there's nothing wrong with trading up to a newer truck. It won't have "older car problems" and it's got relatively low miles. So as long as it runs and drives true I don't see why not!

Not sure how much equity you have in your trades, but i assume youll get at least $2,000 for your truck and probably have something on the Jeep. I had roughly $3,400 in equity in my 2011 tacoma when i traded it on a new one. I financed roughly $26,000 for 72months @ 3.1% and my payment is like $405.

Personally i'd rather pay $400 on a new truck for 72 months on a brand new truck, compared to $400/month for 60 months on a truck with 70,000 miles or whatever it is.

Thanks to all of you for the insight and advice. I can handle up to a $400 payment, I just don't know if I want to. After reading some of your comments I have looked at some 2012's which I should be able to get a decent deal on being that the 2013's should be coming out on the lots soon. I would be lifting it eventually but I still like knowing exactly what has been done to a vehicle and how it has been treated. If I do decide on getting the 2008 I will definitely be taking it to the toyota dealership right up the street and having them check it out before I make a decision on it for sure. I do plan on trying to get them down a little more on the price as well. I'm not planning on doing anything for a week or two anyway so I have some more time to look around and maybe check out craigslist too. I'm also gonna look into selling my current taco straight out and hopefully get a little more money than a dealer would allow me. Thanks everyone for the insight, it's greatly appreciated. I will be sure to update all of you on what I finally decide on with pics of course. I just found a magnetic gray DCB, TRD Sport, 2012, for $27k and some change. It could be a possibility if all the numbers look good with my trade and such. Thanks again!!
