I havent seen many post about Jacumba or Valley of the moon lately. Is it still open to off road and/or camp? I have read good things about it but they seem outdated.

It's BLM and it's open year round. I was last there in February. It should be plenty hot out there right now and with chances of thunder storms. I don't mind the heat, but would not want to wheel out there if it's raining though.

You can always contact the El Centro BLM office for up-to-date information on the area.

I see your are Navy. I recommend being armed out there if your camping due to the very close proximity to the border. Although foot traffic is usually way down in the summer months.

Sweet, it will be in a month or so when I make it out there. I am Navy, and yes when I go out to the desert whether it be gordon's well or Ocatillo i will have something there with me. I had a bad experience at Gordon's and thank god I had my beretta with me as a persuasive way to get some jumpers to keep moving along.
How often do you go out that way? I have never been but it seems really nice. Do you shoot while your out there since it is BLM land?

Cory, I have a toddler almost two now, and wife/baby due in October, so I am pretty much F'ed when it comes to free time to hit up trails. I'd go explore every weekend if I could. Yo u used to be able to shoot in Jacumba but shooting has been closed down by border patrol / BLM.

For shooting locations contact BLM, and or check on Calguns.net Most people will not give up their public shooting location on the Internet because it will get trashed by losers, but if you make friends, study posts, descriptions, pictures, and what not you can usually find nice places.

Jacumba is a neat place and I wish I could go out there soon. But I don't think it's in the cards for me... :(

I went for the first time out there with a friend just in my truck. The border patrol stopped me and asked what the hell I was doing out there. Went on a couple tight trails. Decided I needed to lift my truck up at lest 2inchs because I had to reverse for 10mins out a narrow trail that had a Jeep, quad, and dirtbike sign on it.. That trail got too hard for my non-lifted Tacoma, otherwise I was doing fine.
Was only out there for a couple hours.Next time I want to go with a lifted truck/sliders/other truck or jeep buddies.
OH I aired down and just drove up the road (5mins) to the Shell to fill up my tires.

Hey n0ms, was it this trail in red? And I second your BP experience. They always stop me and run my plates and ask questions before letting me go. Once they clear me they usually radio other agents in the area and they leave me alone. Hiking near the border causes havoc for their "bugs."

Yup ,started on the blue you marked. Saw the tower then went on the path you marked yellow and into some of the red. The red is where I had to turn around. Maybe if had other 4x4s with me would have braved it and kept going. However this one spot on the trail got real nasty. Seeing from the google earth picture you posted I didn't even venture far. Trying to find a nice guide book with listed offroad trails/maps.

n0ms, check out my trail report from February I ran the whole thing (Blue, yellow, and red) solo, in my stock 4x4 with sliders. It was probably the hardest trail I have ever done. Several off-camber very steep sections. Those points I marked on the maps are points where I had to commit to an obstacle knowing that I probably could not return. I'd do that trail again if I get some skids. The last obstacle was a dry waterfall maybe 24" tall or so, that was the worst and I had to spend some time stacking rocks to get down and out. I must have missed the ATV sign, had I seen it I probably would not have done the trail.

Been to Valley of the Moon a couple times , trails are short but fun & yeah you can expect to be stopped by BP entering or leaving , but its no big deal, heres an old link http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/off-roading-trails/126631-valley-moon.html

& I think you mean CORRAL canyon , & its an official OHV park with lots ofg trails with varying degrees of difficulty, pretty much know that place like the back of my hand, open year 'round w/ free camping IIRC, but you still need an adventure pass ($5)
