I have an '04 TRD 4x4 and was just wondering what you folks that have had a first generation think of the second generation. I've heard on these forums certain issues with the electronic transfer shifting and some other stuff. I debated on waiting for the 05's but as it turned out I'm glad I didn't. Now that I'm getting up in miles I'm debating on a new purchase down the road. The 04 has served me well and shall for awhile longer I'm sure.

I'd keep the 1st Gen, I've owned an 05 and now an 06, when I see a 1st Gen on the road I admire it and wish I had one lol!

I do much prefer the styling of generation one. With the high mileage these are known for I guess I can hope for a bright future with my little yota. I pull up next to a newer Tacoma and wow, the size diff is really amazing.

I personally like the look and interior of the 2nd gens. Yeah they may not off road as well but I don't mind that.

i never had a 1st gen as you speak of, but my old pickup was a much more hardy machine than my 2nd gen. its a good truck but lacks the ground clearance and other thoughtful little things that my my old truck had. i think of my new one as more of a minivan, which unfortunately is what meets my needs

I like the electronic t case shifting. It's easy.

Only thing I don't like is the lack of power.

I had an 01 extra cab v6 MT 4x4 off road back in 05-06. Great truck. I miss it sometimes. The build quality was excellent. Traded it in for my new 06. I only miss two things.. not having a truck payment, and the build quality. But its a trade off for more power, and more room/styling. Now im on my third Taco.. 09. In the end, glad I made the switch. Dont get me wrong, I loved that truck.. I just think i like the 2nd gen a little more. Reliability wise, they are both solid. off road, neither have/had issues.

Go test drive one if you haven't already. See of that sways you one way or the other.

Great comments everyone, thanks. I shall most likely drive it for quite awhile longer. I just wish Toyota would come out with some different styling options maybe. But , bottom line is, it's an awesome truck, has served me well and will continue to do so from what I've been reading on the high milers out there. So it would be cost effective to keep it going over buying new. It's almost like an old friend and I don't care to lose an old friend. Yota's saved my arse more than once.

    Good idea!

went from 01 to 06 no regrets. love the extra room and power, only complaint would be the cheap leaf springs. that is all.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I've only ridden in a first gen, and I like the practical and compact feel of it, but I could never have one as a DD for long trips and such. I feel cramped inside, sure would love to have one for a weekend toy or short commuter though eventually.
