So, one of the things I would love for my truck, would be a Cap for my new girl, but one of the things that worry me is the cost. Ideally, i would love something like a Leer 180; i like the raised back look.

On average (perhaps new and used), what are people looking at for cost?

EDIT: Also, if i found a used cap that came off an extended cab, would it work on my double cab?

Stock 4runner for now but hopefully a Tacoma soon.
I'd go used. Those things are outrageous new.

You stated "Camper shell" in the thread title but I think you are asking about caps since that is what you referenced in the thread itself. As mentioned earlier they are not inexpensive and in most cases the old addage of "you get what you pay for" certainly rings true. If not hung up on having new then don't get hung up on color as that can always be changed but many times features cannot be, or if they can it tends to be very cost prohibitive. Prices for used and new vary depending on the market as different regions seem to make more or less use out of them. A friend made a deal with our local Toyota store and bought a shell off of a trade-in that the sales manager didn't think would help the resale price of that truck. Everyone came out with something they wanted and he got what I believe was a fair deal.

When it comes to 2nd Gen Tacoma trucks it's my understanding that the rear of the cabs are identical and it's the bed length that you need to check as their are two different lengths used throughout all of the years. Short, and long. No matter if year models from 2005 - 2012, there are only those two references listed. But for what it's worth, an extended, or access cab Tacoma was only sold with a long bed from my understanding so if you have a double cab long bed sport as indicated in your profile then the lengths will be identical.

Hope that helps and I hope you find what works for you within your budget. Keep us posted.

I guess i never really differentiated between the two terms, since i have seen them used interchangeably.

As it is, you are right, color is not a huge issue, especially if i can find the features if i want. This one had sliding rear windows, which is good enough for me.

The problem is, to get it right now, is around a 7-8 hour round trip (including time to inspect it and put it on). If it isn't sold by friday i will go for it.. otherwise, i will keep looking...

I bought a LEER 100R. It's the cab high version of the 180. If I remember correctly, the 100R started at $1,000 and the 180 at $1,200. Add in the carpeted liner on the inside roof of the shell, removeable front window, and flip up vented "windoors" on each side, and I paid $1,600. If I could have found a used one with the windoors on it, I would have paid $800 for it in a heartbeat!

The cab angle is different on the regular cabs. When I was ordering my shell, the LEER dealer was complaining about someone who had ordered a regular cab shell and then decided they didn't want it. It seems he didn't require pre payment. Black regular cabs are not popular around here (when was the last time you saw one?), and he was having a hard time moving it. He did say the access and double cab longbed shells are interchangeable.

    Brand new, for a cab-height you're looking at $1000+
At $1000, it's going to be very basic... no headliner, no lighting.
My Snug was $1500 with a reinforced roof... it was only $200 more than the cheapest I was willing to go with. That's still cab-height.

For something that's kicked up in the back or overall height above the cab, you're going to be at $1700+ for a new one, and don't be surprised if it's $2500 by the time you option together what you want.
