We need to know which engine and tranny you have. I have a 4cyl access cab 4x4 5 spd and it does what you describe. I don't know the exact speed that first won't engage when rolling but it's pretty slow. Don't force it in. It should slide in if it's going in. Part of driving this 5 spd is timing. Try not to roll slow up to a light. Keep it moving then slow down. Don't worry if you have it in gear all the time. The guy worried about that is just that.. worried. The "fix" for this is double clutching. Slip it in neutral. Let the clutch out. Punch the accelerator. Clutch in. Slide into first.

Toyotas clutching scheme for this truck could have been so much better but with learning to slip the clutch for 1st gear starts and double clutching to get back into first it's not bad. I'm concerned about towing with this truck due to the steep 1st gear it has but will pass that road if/when I get to it.

hey thanks a lot. i have the 09 4x2 reg cab 4cyl 5speed. so like rolling a stop sign or rolling at low mph when the light suddenly turns green, should i double clutch or just put it into 2nd like the other person said? what is best for the car? i think some people are telling me advice for going from a complete stop, but i wanted to know when the car is actually rolling at a low speed (under 5mph) not at a complete stop.

    What engine do you have?

My 4cyl access cab 5 spd doesn't like going back into first either when moving. Honestly with the 4.10 rear end, 1st gear is almost useless when moving - 2nd works fine for any rolling stop or other low speed motoring.

does your car lug though at that low speed as the other users were describing? thanks for the advice, i'll start putting it into 2nd just as long as the car is moving.
