My hounds are Mutts, brother and sister from same litter. They are a cross from Doberman Pinscher, Redbone Coonhound, and Weimaraner.
The Male (Po) looks and acts like a Redbone hound, Female (Bea) looks like a mutt, but acts like a Doberman.
I found them on petfinder.com when i was looking for another Dobi.

That reminds me of a time when a neighbor of mine got a pure bred Weimaraner out of a champion line without ever finding out about the breed first (just on a fanciful whim). Honest to god they told me they thought the dog would 'look' good with them (they were ultra athletic and obsessed with their looks, their home's look, the type of car they drove, etc)....wtf.

Within 2 years the dog was a complete nut (due to the owners inability to train, socialize, work and discipline the dog correctly).

The dog completely destroyed their house when they were away, chewed every piece of furniture to pieces (literally would see furniture in the front of the house for garbage pickup). It killed every small animal it could find (which is generally in it's nature any way). But, unfortunately the owners never socialized it nor introduced it to cats and livestock when it was a pup so what do you expect.

Several awesome incidents during that time included the dog killing several of the neighbors cats. One particulary pleasant evening I hear screaming out in the front of the houses and when I get out on the street I could see the Weimaraner holding a cat by the head in it's mouth and basically locked down on it. It wouldn't let go no matter what any of them tried to do, and to be honest it looked like it was happy for once, (one of them was beating the dog on the back of legs with a stick), eventually they had to take a hose to it's nose and after about an hour got it free (but it was dead, of course). They ended up getting sued in small claims court, put the dog on ritalin (something I completely disagree with for anything living being canine or human), had the dog almost kill several other smaller dogs too and after 2 years had the dog put down.

Truth is the dog was just not trained and worked, simple as that. But if the owners had read up on the breed and trained themselves they might have had a chance or they might have picked a better breed that suited their lifestyle.

Mutts can be pretty awesome. A lot of the wacky inbreeding gets stabilized with the addition of different genes. But it's really sad when you see incredible dogs being abandoned simply because people just don't take the time to learn about them. You see it a lot with certain breeds like Dalmatians because of the Disney movie. Some dogs are simply not very smart (like Chows) and others can be just wound up all the time like certain terriers. All these problems can avoided with a little knowledge and effort... to the benefit of the owners and the dogs.

Ive got a beagle/lab/ and I want to say some dachshund just bc he is long...

He is probably 15 or 16 now and has been my best bud. Always very smart, alert, and a great gaurd dog. Before he got nueterd he was an ecsape artist and always on the hunt for some tail :D
He stayed with my mom once I joined the air force and moved away.

I would like to get another dog in a few years once my little boy is old enough to help out. It will probably be a lab.

    Good luck OP

I've had mutts and they make great dogs! When my wife and I were looking for a new buddy, we would always go to the pound and shelter. In ATL it was always teh same, Pitbulls, or pit mixes. I know some can be great, but i didnt want to take that risk so we just bought our lab from a breeder. Now we live in CO and when we get a yard well get another dog, but it will be a rescue.

anyone ever find a hunting dog at a pound?

i came close. "jackson" was a two year old black lab. he had heartworm and was being treated. if you dont know..treatment included lots of quiet time. as in kenneling..he cant get his heart rate up.

2 year lab, that i had to keep quiet? fuck..like holding back water. that thing wanted to kill every chicken i had. when we did walk and fetch..he was awesome. tired = awesome. i had to give him back, because it was too stressful trying to keep that berzerker quiet. i taught him so many tricks in two weeks..but he was going to die on me..he would run wild and almost collaspe in coughing fits..it was difficult to watch.
