So im 37. When mp3 files came out I was thinking well napster is gonna tank and CDs will be here forever.

Thank baby jesus in a tuxedo i dont play the stock market. Anyway, having missed the boat on mp3s I never really got into ipods or downloading music.

But I sort of want to change that. I am getting into music a little bit again and want to start listening on the road.

I am converting my tired ass cd collection to WMA files to play on my 2012 non-jbl Taco H/U. I am using Windows Media Player (12, i think). Anything I should be aware of...like versions that will/will not play?

SO far, I am ripping the cd into a folder and will burn a pile of songs onto a few CDs. At least that is the plan. WHile I wait for that to happen, I'll bitch about kids on my lawn, the way things used to be, and how much more expensive things are.

Well my Epson Salt bath is ready.....thanks for listening

my other plan is to get Pandora on my bad ass Samsung Galaxy 3 and play it through the AUX port. Since I have 4g service I have not had a song skip on it or buffer. SO I think that may work too.

All in all, Id like to be able to listen to enough stuff I like (WMAs) have enough variety (Pandora) and cancel my XM.....which has both my favorites and variety, but costs some change.

the only thing i would change is not using WMA. just burn to mp3 with a high sample rate. also, not sure bad ass is right to describe the galaxy 3 lol. (thought it was way to big for a damn phone lol)

    neglect, mostly.
man just download itunes. it's great and it's free. whether you have an ipod or not, it's IMO one of the best ways to organize your library. i would suggest getting an ipod though. im not an apple fan, but i am a music freak. i love my ipod like a child.

also, if you have plenty of time and bandwidth, get "Google Play". it's free. it's awesome. they let you upload up to 10,000 songs to their servers so you can access your music anywhere you have internet. over several weeks, while everyone was sleeping (as not to be a bandwidth thief), i uploaded my 40 gig library to it. now i have access to my entire library anywhere i have internet!

and lastly, you'll be better off in general just converting or resaving most of your files to mp3. i read a really neat article the other day about mp3 compared to WAV, etc. There is a difference, but mp3 is still the best way to go. unless you plan on listening to your music stupid loud on stupid nice equipment, you can't tell the difference in lost quality

A couple of comments from another old fart!

    Format:
As mentioned, I would seriously consider ripping to an MP3 format with enough bit rate to cover the sound quality you want. Why? Personally I also started down the WMA path as the reviews I found pointed to the fact that WMA had better sound quality at the same bit rate then an MP3, and I was also a bit of an anti-Apple person. That worked well for awhile, but then one Ipod came into the house and all the music had to be converted away from WMA since I* don't handle WMAs. Same that I* don't support WMA,,, a format pissing match as it were. Now we could have had seperate music and managers for the I* and the non-I*, but I chose to bend to the I* direction as I saw more Apple shtuff coming into the house in the future (was VERY right BTW... Ipods, Iphones, Ipads).

Also, at some point you will want a good music download site and it will not be WMA capable in all probability. IOW chances are better that you will end up with an I* and if you have WMA, then you have the choice to re-rip, or convert from a lossy WMA to a lossy MP3.

Also at some point, more then likely, you will have a HU capable of USB and/or I*. From my experience the I* integration with a HU is MUCH better then USB integration. USB ahs always worked, but I've found it can be iffy if they handle album art, video, directory services (long startup delays while indexing larger USB drives), etc. very well.

Unfortunately all this points to an Apple solution as the easiest one if you want easy integration and connectivity with the most devices.

    IMHO anyway.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
^^^This, just convert them directly to mp3 format, obviously it is a more widely recognized format for most players. wma's are common, but a lot of players still might not recognize it and you will be stuck in silence!

i will go the MP3 route....thanks for the advice. I'll check out google play....I still have to vet the 4g/galaxy as far as always getting a signal.
I am slowly becoming more a digital guy. Hard to break analog thought processes.

Load your MP3s on a jump drive and stick it into the USB port. Switch modes on the radio, and you're off! This was a great surprise for me as I thought I'd have to buy aftermarket to get this function.

I even bought one of the jump drives at Best Buy that has a small head to it (no jokes, please), and the cover over those ports conceals the jump drive pretty well.

Whatever tool you're ripping from, look for an option to "normalize" the audio level. I've found that some of my tracks (from different CDs) are much quieter than others, and I have to keep adjusting the volume as I listen.
