Good for you for tryin it man. I think it looks really nice! Better than I could do for sure. I just took the easy route and bought a Becker.

I've buffed off the finish and added a lanyard in an attempt to de-beautify it to the point where I could beat up on it.

Do any of you guys have the following in your gear?

Quik-clot or similar off brand product
A tourniquet that can be self applied
    Vehicle First Aid kit

I'm looking for these items to keep in my personal car and transfer it back and forth to my work car. Just wondering if anyone has recommendations on some of these for a low price? The First Aid kits are running about $20-30 in most cases, but tourniquets seem a little expensive. Most of them I have found are around $30 for a strap you wrap around a limb. And I'm mainly looking for opinions on Quick-clot. Supposedly the original would cause tissue damage, but there is a newer version out that's better.

Quick-Clot has changed a lot. It used to be granular and we were taught to dump it in a wound, which caused a lot of problems including heat generation that could cause tissue damage. The new stuff uses a different mineral that's infused into a gauze dressing and when the casualty reaches the hospital it's removed just like any regular dressing. Supposedly it has no side effects, although it is still only meant to treat severe bleeding where a tourniquet can't be applied (head, torso, etc).

I usually put anything that you dont want warm or hot in a small backpack or shaulder bag. If I am out and about and will be out of my truck for any extended period of time I just carry the bag or backpack with me.

Also,....No one has mentioned one of the most important survival items your truck could have.....water microfilter similar to this one...

    http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-8013618-Pocket-Water-Microfilter/dp/B0007U00YE

I got mine from REI for 70 bucks....you dont need the super expensive kind they all work the same. Clean water is your friend. : )

so my girlfriend asked me last night why i keep all of this stuff in my truck, and why i have bags packed and ready to go etc.. etc.. i explained that i'm not a nut case(IMO anyways...) and i do this in case something happens. she asked me like what? i said, well we don't really need to worry about hurricanes here but some kind of natural disaster or something like that. maybe an alien attack or whatever....lol she said she sees my point, but after we were discussing it last night i realized there is still a huge gap in my emergency plan.

I work about 12 miles from my house, she works downtown, a good 35 miles from our house. lets say some crazy natural disaster happens. there is no cell service, maybe some of the bridges in and out of the city are not passable... i still don't have a good plan as far as a place where we can meet up, get to the house to get the rest of our items and then bug out from there if necessary. i'm confident i can get back to the house, but i need to come up with a meeting place for us both to meet.

She drives a cobalt, if there is debris etc... all over the place the cobalt is not known for its off road capabilities. i know its a stretch that something that bad would happen, but i like to be prepared for the worst so i can be covered as much as possible in any situation.

any ideas on how to go about planning this next part to my emergency/bug out/whatever part of my plan?

I think i remember seeing a clever way to mount a rifle with manufacturer links on this discussion. I cant find it for the life of me. It was mounted on the roof in an Access Cab. Any help?

Bikes are a great idea if the situation ever arose. lots of other countries use them as load carriers

As so many here are find of saying when it comes to 4wd, its better to have it and not need it, than to need it or or have it.

Forget for a moment, the absolute horror disasters, and just think bout the day to day stuff that can go wrong...

How many of you like playing in the mountains (skiing, climbing, etc) All it takes is a blown tire, bad snow storm, or animal darting in the road, and now you are off the road, unable to easily get help. What turned into a day trip, can easily become days of hoping for somebody to find you, or you being forced to walk dozens of miles for help. The difference between life and death can be made by the choice of supplies you keep with you ...

It really shouldn't take a doomsday prepper to see why having even decent basic supplies with you is a smart move ...

Not sure if it was me you were talking about -- It is a "Big Sky" single sport (non law enforcement - not locking) roof mounted rifle rack. I REALLY like it - it could be handcuffed or cable locked in but I am always with the truck when toting the AR - camping or what not.

    Good luck with your solution....
