I broke off my 7 way plug on my 05 tacoma and am in the process of relocating it to the bumper. I purchased a hopkins just like this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Flagline-4718...8&qid=1346390314&sr=8-4&keywords=hopkins+plug

I cut off the old plug and wanted to just use the existing wire harness to hook up to this one (just match up the colors and use heat shrink and be back in business). I am concerned however because the colors don't match up perfectly. The toyota harness has a "red" wire and the new hopkins plug has a "purple" wire, otherwise everything else matches. The hopkins plug says for chevy/ford/... but I didn't think that would matter since I am actually connecting the wires. Can I just connect purple to red?

The electricity doesn't care what color the insulation is.

Use a meter or test light to confirm that the red wire on the Toyota connector goes to the same blade as the purple wire on the new connector.

Also verify that the rest of the connections are the same... don't just blindly follow the color.

Thanks for the advice. What is the simplest way to test these connections? First of all, it is difficult to tell which wires go to which blades on the new socket because there is some kind of insulation material over the connections. Also, do I just hook the harness up to the truck, connect the wires and put a voltage meter on the end to see if everything lines up correctly?

Match this to the wiring diagram from the one you bought.

funny that you guys are talking about this, I purchased a 4 pin connector for a little 10 ft trailer i had for my jeep wrangler and blindly matched colors when splicing into the brake lines... found out when my brake light came on with the left turn signal that the jeep lights didn't follow any particular order when wired up. Had to take it apart and do it all over again.
