I'll be shooting in my first one this weekend. i haven't shot in competition since college. I'm shooting with another retired Army colonel as a two-man team. We will be shooting at 300, 600 and 1000 yards.

We are both shooting WWII vintage Soviet Mosin Nagant M91/30 PU sniper rifles. I posted mine in the SHow Off thread earlier but here it is:

Mine is a 1942 Izhevsk sporting an original 1942 Progress scope - 3.5X fixed focus. They are simple and rugged - and accurate.

I started reloading my own match rounds - more expensive than MILSURP you can buy but much more accurate and non-corrosive.

I had this rifle tweaked by one of the experts with the 91/30s - all within competition standards and he did wonders with the trigger. The 91/30s were mass produced and a smooth trigger pull was not a consideration on standard infantry rifles. It now has a smooth 5lb pull.

I've been working on zeroing the scope and this weekend shot a string of 25 rounds to finish. While reloading, I had a digital scale toast itself and I knew I had 2 or 3 light rounds in the mix. i mixed the rounds up so I wouldn't know when I'd get a light one.

Here's my target. The first 10 rounds - 5 at a time since the magazine only holds 5 - were at the lower left. 1st 5 were slightly right. I made a slight adjustment and 4 of 5 went in the bull.

Then I moved to the lower right - again 10 rounds. I played with my aim point making sure I was able to pick my point. I had one "light" round in each 5.

Then I made my final adjustments and zeroed the windage knob - then fired my last 5 at the center red bull. 4 dead on and 1 "light" round. At least the powder screw ups were consistent - all hit about the same distance below my aim point. This also shows how much of a difference powder measure means - and why mass produced ammo isn't great for competition.

I'm really pleased with this rifle and looking forward to the competition.

Just 50 for zero - running up the elevation knob will adjust for the change in distance. Hopefully, the winds will be light. For the match, we shoot at silhouettes - not bulls and you are scored as hit/miss.

If you're going to be one...be a Big Red One.

Nice rifle. I have a Lee Enfield and a Swedish Mauser. The Mauser was upgraded with a fiberglass sport stock. Both are nice rifles but for accuracy I prefer my Mauser.
