I am new to this site so i still dont know exactly what im doing. but i have a 2003 tacoma sr5 4x4 with the 2.7 liter and automatic trans. i was wondering how easy it would be to put a diesel engine into my truck. and if it can be done, what engines work well in the tacoma. the reason for this is i am trying to get more power out of the truck and i am also just a huge diesel fan and i love the idea of a diesel powered tacoma

Anything can be done for the right amount of money..

    this is a hilux diesel..avalible everywhere..but here..not cheap. about 20,000 for a toyota diesel.

    http://dieseltoys.com/toyota

you want power? should got a V6 and then Supercharged it. PLENTY O power there buddy.

but nobody said you couldn't get a custom 4 cyl Cummings in there..you just need the money for it. There is a reason why its not a popular mod..most ppl can't afford it haha

No actually im a Turbo guy. Had a supra project car before my Tacoma. Turbos are WAY WAY more efficient and produce more power per pound of boost then a SC does. And while everyone says that "turbo lag" is the down fall..not true. If you match the right exhaust housing and clip to the correct size Inducer wheel on the turbo to the motor..you'll have practically no turbo lag.

But..turboing our trucks is a BITCH haha i was going to do it to mine for a while..but really a SC is the best way on our trucks due to them being made specifically for our rigs and supply ample amounts of power for what we need. I have been in a 1st and 2nd gen SCed tacoma..and it helps a TON. Add the URD kits and open the exhaust up some more..you'll have PLENTY of power for wheeling or towing within the recommended tow capacity.

But i don't want to turn this into a turbo vs SC thread  I have worked with both and a SC will never beat a Turbo..sorry.

I got the crazy idea of twin charging the taco once too(SC and turbo)...no way in hell i could afford that ha plus reliability goes out the window.

Diesel swap is a lot of money why not spend the money on regearing and putting lockers on your rig and turbo that bitch. But if you got the money and know people that can help you out go for it

Then all you have to do is crank it up to 70 pounds of boost and youd be racing with the big dogs :D

If you were todo a turbo set up would you have todo anything to the motor so it can handle power or would you have to build up the motor before you install the turbo

Depends on how much boost you run. Usually you can run 7-8 psi on a stock motor

70lbs?? lol more like driving a truck with a grenade in the hood..lol

Nope..well..depends on your goals. The 2.7 will take up to 8psi on stock internals fairly well. even up to 10 i think. But you must remember the psi is really relative to the turbo. A 38mm turbo doesn't move as much air as a 67mm turbo. So even then a boost gauge could both read 8psi..the 67mm is moving WAY WAY more air then the 38mm. So you have to keep that in mind as well.

but id gladly run around a 35-45mm turbo on a 2.7l with up to 4-10psi and be totally happy. The biggest thing id change to the block is get a metal head gasket..so you'd have to have the block and head decked for a proper seal. But the stock internals would be fine at the level.

Now if you going higher..get forged pistons at least for 10-15psi and rods would be nice at that point too but you NEED them for anything higher. At that point might as well do a valve job and redo the head too for better flow.

but you would be fine with under 10psi no problem..as long as you supplied enough fuel. Thats the tricky part..

yea..and i don't know a ton about the 2.7l ecu to know what piggy backs to use..

I think you can use Supra stock injectors which a 440cc..so that'll help a lot. Get a Walbro 255lph pump. AFPR to adjust, then a piggy back to fine tune..thats what you'd need at minimum for fuel haha

Anyone know WHY we can't have the Hulix? I'm guessing something about our governments regulations even though there's plenty of other diesels on our roads.
