IMHO over sensitivity. Closing school for a week because 2 people have a confirmed case of the Swine Flu? Seriously keep the two at home and let school resume. If you have issues, has your child received a "flu vaccine"? Yes? Then see you Monday if not you better keep the little shit at home and BTW here is the expected homework for the period missed.

It's like bird flu. Unless you're really old/really young and infirm you'll be fine.

Move on with your lives citizens. It's a slow news month.

Agreed 100%. Just looked at some quick stats and in Canada 4,000-8,000 people die each year from "regular" flu related complications. In the US, 36,000 die each year from the same and roughly 200,000 get hospitalized. Those are people who generally have compromised immune systems and whom live in first world countries with advanced medical systems. Imagine what the numbers are for people living in third or second world countries and compare that number to what is being reported for this swine flu outbreak . . .

I look at this as nothing more than another strain of flu for us to contend with. I don't get all worked up over the "regular" flu even though it kills hundreds of thousands of people every year across the world (and requires hospitalization for millions), so why would I get worked up over this?

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
There's a lot to be said for what NMG mentioned. A lot of people die of the common flu every single year. I think what scares people with this particular flu is that nothing much is known about it. But even so, the odds still look overwhelmingly in your favor if you get it. 1,600 cases so far and 100 deaths. So that puts the odds at a roughly 1/15th chance you could die from it.

Then again, this is such a new and unfolding event, who knows what will happen? All I can say is that my wife and I had planned on riding the subway to the San Fran Airport. The Subway passes through Oakland, CA, which has A LOT of Hispanic immigrants. No way. We're taking a shuttle now.

I was in the taqueria in my home town. The cooks were wearing masks. My buddies and I joked about it while we were there. I felt bad later then it wasn't funny anymore. I got a little scared. Then I realized it was just the normal taqueria diarrhea you get from bad sanitaion. Yeah!!!

I keep thinking about the Southpark episode where they get SARS from the indian blankets. Dayquil and Sprite is the most powerful medicine and only 98% of the sick will make it.

I cant believe people are really freaked out about this. Some of you older folks might remember the swine flu scare in 1976. Its all hyped up bullshit by the media and the government to keep you scared and under control. In the 76 scare I think 7 people died from it and 20 something died from the vaccination. Please people wake up and take back control of your lives and dont let fear mongers keep you down. Remember Sars or even the bird flu?

"So far, fear is spreading faster than the swine flu. But for varied reasons, this flu seems spookier than the ordinary "seasonal" flu, whose related causes, federal officials say, kill 36,000 Americans a year."
