One of my hobbies is building gaming computers and computers for high end photographers and very rarely do i build a gaming computer WITH a hard drive only ssd for gaming computers they are super fast and have very small failure rates. When ever i build a computer for photographers it is ssd and 10k drives or 7200 if you put a bunch in RAID. But since you are on a budget i would suggest just to get maybe a 10k or if really short on cash 7200 will do the charm but if you find money later on ssd is the way to go.

    hello fellow Sac member

Heres my specs. I do photo editing mainly, but I also use it to edit my GoPro videos and it manages them very quickly!

I'm going say GET AN SSD. The prices HAVE dropped, pretty low these days. You don't need a huge one. Just put your program files and Windows on the SSD. Get low latency memory if you're going AMD, or high speed memory if you're going Pentium. Cooling your computer is a big deal these days so don't go cheap on a cooling solution either.

If you're going for video editing you want the ability to channel large amounts of memory quickly, so while processor speed is very nice, ultimately your motherboard and memory will have a huge impact on this.
This computer is very fast, and I built it for very little money.

Don't waste your time and money overclocking, OC'ing is a nice hobby and all but if you want more power just wait for a new processor to come out.

Agreed. Its nothing more than a hobby. In this day and age....6 cores like mine are cheap.....there's very few programs that utilize that many cores anyways. Worst downside is all the heat thrown. My computer is like a furnace.

if i was building one i'd go with an SSD as a primary drive (just has to be big enough for the OS and misc stuff), and one or two large capacity HDDs to store programs and content...

i only overclock my computer in the winter for this very reason OC just puts more stress on your componets unless you dont want them to work for more than 2-3 years then i wouldnt do it and it gets very tricky on some bios to OC

exactly what I have setup. Well worth it!

Everyone says that.... I've overclocked all my machines, even my old laptop and never had a core component fail. I've had my old AMD CPU up to over 120C on accident. It took a while to cool off but it survived. Stupid fan failed. Life expectancy is not a huge concern to me because of this. Honestly as long as you have things cooled properly you should be fine.

    Ok build lots of computers:

1st: Wrong forum for this question :). But dont worry, Ill get you fixed up. Give me a few mins and Ill PM you a wish list from newegg.com

2nd: Generally Newegg has the best prices but even if they dont, their support is by far the best. If you build a lasting relationship with them, their customer support gets better. Ive ordered the wrong size fan once and they told me to keep them, re-imbursed me the money, and send the ones I wanted for free . Now, Ive spent more than 20k on thier site so....

If you want it cheaper, start with the HD, followed by the Case, then CPU. For gamming computer dont skimp on the PS. This one will give you the option of SLI down the line (a second card). Never compromise your GPU for CPU. Moboard is important if you want to overclock.

If you have the know how, I would suggest you get the cheapest i5 and overclock it. In the end, however, you will see little benefit from CPU speeds in gamming until you get a second video card.

I love the fact in the 80's, being a nerd was a bad thing.

Now, Nerds are the new jocks..

    Diddo!

    And hot moms too

I used to get beat up in the 80's for playing with my PC more than people.

I remember in HS the star football QB beat me up for being a nerd. Laughed my ass off when I saw him working at sears last year selling TV's. Guess them football skills really helped out in life huh?

Haha, same! I know one guy that was "The Phenom" when it came to football. Well now he lives in a trailer and dropped out of college after only one semester. I guess football didn't help him also? Isn't Karma a beautiful thing?

Can I reuse my case that I built my old computer in, it has this power supply as well:
    http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-modstream-power-supply-eol.html

I like your suggestions st andrew but 850 watts seems extreme, and I will never go sli because I upgrade so infrequently that by the time I want to upgrade I'll need a whole new everything, so can you suggest a cheaper mobo? I also want 8gb ram minimum, lucky me ram is cheap.

Get Nvidia if you want to use it for compute rendering. The gtx 480 on newegg.com is on sale right now and its the best bang for your buck. Programs take better use of Nvjdia cards more than AMD cards.

And also if you want to save some money you can get the 2600k and get a h80 cpu cooler and overclock it to 4.4ghz. Overall the performance difference between ivy bridge and sandy bridge isnt that noticable especially if you pair it with a gtz 480. Also note that Nvidia featured some Quadro features into the 4xx series that they removed in the 5xx series.
With the money you save on getting the 480 vs the other card and getting the last gen cpu you can put the savings toward a bigger monitor [bigger monitor is always better when editing]

All OC does is stress the hardware it is like driving you car around at above red line on RPMs all the time. I have OC all my machines and my gaming machine is OC every time i play games or use some programs to help speed things up. As long as you have the proper cooling there should be no prob with it and if the CPU last 4 years by that time it is in the garbage and i got a new MB and CPU lol.
