I've been selling and installing the petsafe systems as a side business for 10 years now and can honestly say my customers have always been very satisfied and have had nothing but praise for these systems.
The key is definitely training and I lecture my customers on this aspect to be sure they put in the time working with their dogs. I have literally sold 1 wireless system due to the limited small area they enclose.
Ive personally had my system since 1997 and have had 2 german shepherds which are a challenging breed to contain. You have to be vigilant keeping the 9volt battery fresh and work with them once a year.
Ive had one lightning strike out of the hundreds of systems Ive installed which caused no damage to the garage the transmitter was installed in, but did a number on the wire and transmitter and surge protector.
My wife jogs with our shepherd and she knows when the receiver collar is removed and her collar with leash are applied that she is good to go. We even go on vacation and leave the dogs the full 2 acres and have someone stop by to check and feed them.
Its just personal preference really. Owners who have already worked with their pets on basic commands and obedience do especially well with these systems.

Great brand as well. More bells and whistles and some really nice rechargeable collars.

Alot of dogs will see a rabbit or squirrel and have their predator response triggered. They'll run through the fence without even a flinch..chase whatever...and when they come back will sit outside the fence and bark to be let back in. My uncle's dogs do it all the time.

A lot of people around me have them, because there is no fences alowed around here. Just have to train them where the bounds are. I see people have little white flags, to show the dogs for a few weeks.

I remember my uncle who lived in Colorado had one. I was younger visiting with my parents, my uncle had s pretty big dog, I forget what breed, but me and my dad went to go for a walk, and the dog decided he wanted to come. He ran right out, and his collar would beep with every shock, and get stronger the longer he was out. So we where tryin to get him in the yard, and he is just wagging his tail ready to go, as the collar was beeping away. We still laugh about that.

Proper training will typically prevent this, especially with Petsafe's Stubborn dog collar that beeps, vibes and zaps (5adjustable levels).

Additionally, you can enclose gardens, landscaping, pool, etc to prevent dog from entering unwanted areas and also I have a couple "indoor units" that you can move around to help keep them outta trouble.
