    2.25"

You'll lose some low end power with the 2.5" IIRC

Just buy the muffler only and replace the stock one little bit cheaper

there is no need whatsoever to go larger than the stock exhaust diameter unless you are already making ALOT more power than stock. you wont have adequate backpressure and you will lose power. it does change the tone but in my opinion it sounds worse. I have a magnaflow on my truck in place of the stock muffler, and the rest of the exhaust is stock. it sounds decent, and its alot cheaper. If you want a better tone from your engine, put an aftermarket intake on it if you havent already. I made mine but an AFE pro dry is a good option if you wanna buy one.

So did you go with a 2.25 i/o or a 2.5? I am looking to just take the stock muffler off and place magnaflow 12255 on and use stock piping. I believe our stock diameter is 2.25, and it seems like every one on the forum is opting for 2.5?

yes stock is 2.25 ... unless you put performance headers and completely redo ALL the piping 2.5 is a waste of money

After calling a couple places and speaking with magnaflow. I went with 2.5 inlet./outlet. Our stock pipe is 2.25, but i went and measured with calipers and the outer diameter is 2.38. So if you got a 2.25 inlet/outlet you would need the shop to expand the muffler and risk splitting the metal. If you get the 2.5 it will slip over and weld the gap that is only 0.06 in. anyways. Not to mention for magnaflow the core size for the 2.5 and 2.25 is the same...2.5 in. Also get your muffler off Amazon, the price is identical for 2.5 and 2.25 inlet/outlet sizes. I paid $71 for PN 12256. A lot better than the $120 the muffler shop wanted. I hope this helps people, because I researched the crap out of this topic. 2012 Tacoma V6 4.0L

The 12256 sounds amazing. Cannot hear it at idle, and is very deep. Got it welded on for 45 bucks and the welds look awesome, replaced all hangers perfectly. Seems to be a little bit more responsive. So everything turned out great. Note: This system is offset center. For my 2012 he welded it center in offset out. Everything lined up perfect and it is tucked inches under the frame. Could not be happier!
