Anyone here running sporterized mausers? I have had one for years that was re barreled to 308 Win. Got bored with it cause everyone around here has that caliber or 30/06 or 270. I have owned all of these calibers at one time and they are great game getters. But I have moved into older cartridges and semi wildcat ones. Right now I'm loving a Model 70 classic featherweight in 6.5x55. But I just sent my old mauser of to be rechambered to a 30/06 Ackley Improved with xs ghost ring sights added as well for a thick brush gun. Anyone else rechambered their mausers?

Nope....it came from the factory just like it should have. I have never seen a reason to cut up a nice old gun for the want of something different. Do it with a new one. Just my $.02..not meant to be disrespectful, only my opinion .

I go back and forth on this.
I love to do what I can to preserve history, but face it... it's not a numbers-matching Garand.

Grandpa picked it up off a dead Kraut, squirreled it away and kept it safe, risking bringing it home, stored it and cared for it for 70 years, and it's STILL only a $75 rifle.

And most Mausers available now are not numbers matching and are typically Russian armory rebuilds.

What it boils down to, it's the owner's rifle, and as long as he understands that the modified version is no longer transferable as a C&R, it's his choice and I don't hold anything against someone who "Bubbas" a Mauser or Mosin.

When I recieved my mauser it already had the barrel chambered in 308 on it. I would love to have one in the 8x57 chambering if i had that I wouldn't of went with the ackley improved. I think it is one of the most underrated big game rounds in North America mainly because of american ammunition companys downloading it. Handloading really makes it shine at its true potential like it was intended to do. Im an avid reader of WW2 history and would love to have an original mauser in great condition. It is hard to change perfection

I don't know when you live...but an original German Mauser today is worth a hell of alot more than $75. I paid more than that for the Czech version almost 15 years ago.

I have an old 8MM Mauser that still has the steps on the barrel just the stock was changed out. It is still a great shooter I think it matches up ballistic wise to a 30/06
