I have been shooting the NBRSA sanctioned 1,000 yard matches at Tucson rifle Club for a couple years. They have two classes (Light Rifle, and Heavy Rifle) and it takes a custom benchrest rifle to do well with the experiences guys shooting this game. I shoot a 6.5 x 284 Norma chambered rifle built on a BAT action and Kreiger 30" barrel, McMillan stock, and you need a good scope, most of us use Nightforce scopes. My rifle weighs 15.9 pounds and makes weight in Light Rifle class but I shoot both classes with it to get the most practice, gain the most experience. After you get a good rifle and rests, learn how to shhot it, develop a precise handload, it is all about reading the wind and keeping your cool. Great time with great group of guys. Why else would I get up at 3:30 AM on my day off, drive 150 miles to shoot in the heat/cold/wind? Very satisfying to do well and I learn every time (sometimes I learn that the wind Mistress kicked my ass!).

600 yards is sweet! I have a nice built 308 that is great at 600 yards. Some shooters can make a 308 shoot good groups at 1,000 but I have tried it numerous times and had bullts off paper when I missed a wind let-up or slight reversal. But at 600 this cartridge in a decent rifle is great fun!

If we planned this out I have a good portable target and a range finder we could do 500 or 600 out in the desert some time (once it cools off). If you guys have matches at 600 let me know, might join you.

I have a .308 as well. Currently its a Rem 700 sps Tactical and Nikon 4x16 scope. I actually just ordered a Bell & Carson fully glassed and adjustible tactical stock, Badger detachable magazine system, and Timney 2 stage match trigger I will be installing once I get home.
Currently I am shooting .6 moa at 100yds off bipod or bags but I have easily reached out to 300+ yards. I havent had a chance to go longer.

I have a good friend on Tucson who owns a custom ammo shop. He hand loads me 168gr Hornady SST rounds.

I would be game to hit a range any time. Just post when you come down to Tucson and if I am in town I am there. I was a designated marksman on two of my ships so I know the basic fundimentals of reaching out and touching stuff but I can always use someone to bounce stuff off of.

The National Bench Rest Shooting Association (NBRSA) 1000 yard matches are every second Saturday at Tucson Rifle Club West of Tucson on Hwy 86. Matches start at 7:00 AM. If you are interested at all I would suggest you stop by and and spactate for an hour or so. We finish by noon. All safe range rules apply of course. While ther is not much to watch from the firing line you can see what equipment is being used and if you get to the pits (target end of the range) you can see some ofthe targets. We usually have several groups under 7" and hopefully some are mine!

We score targets for both points and group size. So it is possible to have a small group but off to the side and thus mediocre score. My personal best was June 14, 2011 when I shot a Light Rifle group (5-shot groups) of 50 with 3X's, this is all rounds in the 10 ring and three of them in the center X area. That lucky day I took first for group and score as it was a 3-7/8" group as well. (best I have ever done by far). This is like hitting a coffee mug 5 out of 5 times at 1,000 yards. My aggregate (average of all three record groups) was 5.35", so it was a great day for me....

My 308 is nearly as good but it ends at 600 yards. I will be shooting it this weekend at 600 at Ben Avery Range for a couple hours. I have not shot this rifle since early Spring and need trigger time with it. It is a custom on a Rem 700 action with Leupold 6.5-20 glass. I have had it for 12 years now, still shoots great.

I have a Lecia range finder that is good to 1000 on something big enough to shoot at. My "portable target" is just a good sturdy take-down wood stand intended to hold 2 or 3 SR-1 paper targets. Stand is 6 feet wide. We shoot SR-1 service rifle targets on it (iron-sighted AR15 at 100 yards). Great fun too and supports the need to keep sharp with irons and position shooting.

The 600 and 1000 yard stuff is allways benchrest for me and at an established range, but 600 from the ground with bi-pod is good for those who bring a shooting matt. Problem with longer range stuff out in the desert is treking back and forth to the targets. I like most any shooting type, but then I have been playing these games for a long time, not very good at much, but I have fun!
