I recently upgraded from my 1986 Toyota pickup to a new 2012 Tundra, and I love all the new features! Except that I sort of miss the resistance provided by the non-power steering, especially in tight spaces like backing into my garage.

I've tried to do some research on how power steering in general works, and it seems like in theory it would be possible to make adjustments so that the pump provided less assistance (and maybe prolong the pump's life), or remove the pump entirely and replace it with a direct connection.

In practice though, I haven't really found any good instructions or stories from people who've actually done that, and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience or wisdom about it.

Anything is possible, but this presents too many issues for it to remotely be feasible. IMO.

Just get yourself adjusted to the new truck.
