Aftermarket black headlights. Which brand is best?

I am to lazy to open up my headlights. I am planning on doing a retrofit at some point, but for now I just want to eliminate the hazy stock chrome lights.

When I began searching I noticed that there are tons of different brands that make black lights. They all seem to be in the $150-$250 range. Is there any one brand that is the best? Don't mind paying on the higher end but only if they are appreciably better.

Let me know your experiences with brands, and how much you paid.

Do you have these? Any problem with fit/finish and especially fogging up?

 

Those jdms are good, but your stock headlights are the best you'll probably find until you do the retrofit. If you go with those jdms (or any aftermarket lights for that matter) get some ge silicone and put a bead around it. It'll reduce the chances greatly of the lights fogging on you.

 

Just squirt liberally around the seals? Does anyone sell a basic pre retrofitted light? No of fence to guys that run them but the angel eye led lights aren't my style.

 

I did this research a little while back too. The response I got was the best was from the company Revotec on ebay. Costs more than most. I went and bought them. FIt perfectly, and no leaking (i live in hawaii and its always raining where i am), and I wash every week or 2. I'm very happy with it.

Put a thick bead down on the seal between the lens and the grey backing. Then take some plastic grocery bags, wrap your fingers in them and use them to press the silicon into the seal. Keeps your hands clean.

 

oh yah and FYI i still did the silicone bead anyway

 

I have the JDM lights and they both leaked, I ended up opening them and reasealing. It wouldnt be necessary to open them up, but i had to clean the lens from the prior leak.

Like others said, just run a bead of silicone along the edge, and also in the top corner youll see a small screw, cover that with silicone as well, that was the main leak on my passenger side light.

 

I was about to pull the trigger on the Revotecs but then I saw the $120 shipping to Hawaii. Ouch.

 

2 this, they sell pretty good stuff, I'm happy with mine as well.

 

There are members on here who will do a TRS retrofit the way you want and mail it to you. It will cost more but if you're too lazy to do it right yourself then you have to be rich enough to have someone else do it right for you.

Your stock headlights are better than most of those weak ebay ones. To save hundreds i'd say just bake em yourself

 

One other note, I ran a set of the aftermarket BHLMs for awhile. While the lights worked fine and I didn't have any leakage problem, I did notice that the light distribution pattern was not as good as stock. The aftermarket's light had a hot-spot in the center of the pattern, and then was dimmer around the edges. Not dangerously so, but enough that I ended up going back to a stock HL (the smoked TRD version though).

BTW, I bought from my aftermarkets from Revotek.

 

Has anyone on this thread done the BLHM? How hard is it to do? I want to do it just scared to back my headlights.

There are many write ups on here man, just search BHLM write up and read through a few of them and look at pictures until you feel comfortable

 

The mod was easy. Just took half a day and a can of paint. I was scared at first but once I got the light open it was smooth sailing. Word of advice though, if u do it have some wax paper handy when u are putting the reflectors back in as they tend to scratch some of the paint. Also, tape over the turn signal, dtrl reflector. It'll be covered by separate pieces of plastic. I painted mine and now it is difficult to see my turn signal during the day.

It’s so easy! First time I did a set I was 15...been doing it ever since lol!

 

There is a better silicone for this that is more of a liquid and runs into the cracks of the seal. Get it at any auto parts store. Two tubes can do once around each headlight then touchup about half of each if needed after drying. This is much easier than the normal thick silicone. I never smelled it gassing off either.
