Im wanting to get a first gen 4x4 in stock form and the only change I plan to make is as close to stock tiresize I get in all or mud terrain.
Currently working on oil rig, and I need 4x4.
The truck I drive now is a 94 dakota 4x4 v8 with 32s and <12MPG just aint cutting it anymore ha.

My only concern with a first gen is balljoints.
Being that ill be driving down washed out horrible rig roads Im majorly concerned about the first gen balljoint giving out and dropping lower control arm.

Was the balljoint issues resolved? Can I just replace balljoint with newer style?

I need input for my future purchase or nonpurchase

1st gens are a great truck in general with a few things to watch out for.
depending on where you are located keep an eye out for frame rust. first gens are notorious for that.
there was a limited recall for ball joint issues and we've had a few members here who have lost wheels because of it (everyone's OK, just sad to see a 3 wheeled Taco on a tow truck bed :( ). I replaced both my upper and lower ball joints last year with Moog grease-able ones and I have no complaints. Check out Rockauto.com, they have great prices, great service and are a vendor here so you get a discount.
These trucks are nearly invincible - just make sure they've had all regular maintenance.

Welcome and happy shopping! If you find one you like but just aren't sure let us know and I'm sure we can pick it apart for you.
