changing the rear diff fluid, story

    About a year ago I changed out the oil in rear diff. I followed advice of people in here and used quaker state with LSD additive. about a month ago I started getting a bad shudder, seemingly from the front end. took to the Toyota dealer and explained the problem, they took it for a drive and decided the shudder was transfering up from the rear. They changed the rear diff fluid and it fixed the problem. they said to always use Toyota
    fluids.
    Just a heads up.

    Mobil 1 75w90 every 30k miles. I'm at 75k now, with no problems.

    I dont change my rear diff fluid that often, but when I do, I use Toyota fluids. :D

    I'm about to change the oil in my differential, too.

    The owner's manual calls for 90W API GL-5 gear oil. I have looked everywhere for this stuff, and no one has it, even in bulk. So I went to the local dealer, and asked where they got the stuff. He tells me that they just use regular 80W-90. So I asked him if he knew that the manual calls for 90W, he said "Yeah, all the time.
    $28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75W-90 in the front, 80W-90 in the rear". Then I asked him what they did for the LSD trucks, and he told me that they have a deal with a local supplier for regular 'ol aftermarket friction modifier.

    Hope that helps. I think that if the dealer is using stuff off the shelf at Pep Boys, even for trucks under warranty, it should be fine for us, as well. Just make sure you use friction modifier for LSDs, and top it off the way the manual says. I'm at 62,000 miles, and no indications of anything wrong, at all. So much for "Toyota" diff oil.

    The Toyota Dealership told you to always use Toyota fluids? No kidding?

    Consider this: If you had changed your diff fluid with ANY appropriate lube, your issue likely would've been solved. The additive pack was probably just breaking down.
