I have a cap on my taco (2009 TRD crew) which has required I remove the tailgate. Is there an aftermarket camera I can install that will feed to the mirror display?

    Thanks in advance

The camera bolts into the gate and you can remove it from the gate by taking apart the gate inside skin. It can then be mounted anywhere with a custom mount or bracket.

I have a Boyo VTL 375 camera. It mounts using my rear license plate bolts. Works great at night, with or without my tailgate and is no obvious at all.

It may be worth checking out.

Thanks for the advice - I didn't realize the stock camera could be removed from the gate.

Just wondering, are you getting a better image quality with an aftermarket camera?

Not sure, as I don't have an OEM camera to compare.

My issue was slightly different, since i had a cap and a tire gate which completely blocked the OEM stock camera location. Since i wanted the ability to take the tire gate off and still have a backup camera thats usable i decided to purchase a OEM camera and harness to help with ease of installation.

I didn't know what kind of camera quality i would get ordering something off Ebay so thats why i kept with OEM (for now)

This is definitely not the cleanest install i've ever done and is a bit of a hack job but i do plan on remounting it somehow over the winter months. It works tho and does the trick for now...
