My wife complains about the shape of the passenger seat. Something about the way the head rest hits her head. She will not wear a pony-tail and sit up front with me. In fact, she would rather ride in the back regardless of how her hair is fixed. And no, it is not because of me--its the seat! Anyway, does anyone else think the passenger seat is designed awkward?

If so, is there a fix? Thanks for your input.

You can switch the front and rear headrests so they're more flat and should stay out of her way. Or try leaning the seat back a couple of notches.

Just keep in mind that if you have a crappy insurance company, you may not get a claim for whiplash should anything happen,

Wait, you have a passenger seat in your kitchen??

But seriously, as mentioned above, I would try reclining the seat a bit. They do feel odd if the seat is in the straight up position, but are very comfortable (to me) when reclined just a bit.

Tell her she would be more comfortable with her head in your lap.

My wife complained of the exact same thing. The problem is that the headrest angles forward, and is fixed in that position. Shorter people will find that the headrest then tips their head forward and down...and a ponytail will make the situation even worse.

Try swapping-out the front headrest for the back one as Ouyin2000 suggested, or lift out the front headrest and re-insert it facing backwards. Just don't remove it entirely or you are begging for whiplash in an accident.

    Hope that helps.

So... she doesn't like the front seat and prefers sitting in the back seat where she can't touch the radio... I'm failing to see the issue here

Its called "active headrests" or some other such nonsense. The headrests were redesigned at some point to be highly uncomfortable, but theoretically safer in a crash. Not Toyota's choice. Legal requirement.

I dont mind the headrests, but the passenger seat with no lumbar is terrible. There is zero padding in the very bottom of the seat back. I hate the passenger seat.

angle the head rest back for her. i had this problem on the drivers side. the photo below you can see the difference between my passenger seat headrest (stock) and my modified drivers seat.

its very easy to do... take one of the legs of the head rest, wrap it in a rag, slide it into a vice, in the normal head rest top up position, you want the vice jaw as close to the head rest pad as possible holding the leg, close the vice, then while holding the 'free leg' thats not clamped in the vice jaw, push your chest into the top of the head rest bending the headrest back. its going to take a lot of force. do the same for the other leg and make them match. im MUCH more comfortable now.

I don't have this issue but maybe take it out, put it in a vice and bend the stupid thing back till you get it right.

    Might work.

Mine look like that too. I just have my seat leaned back an extra notch so I don't notice the headrest. If I lean back into the seat I do, though.

i think the angle is a US crash safety thing now thats regulated, its awful. Its exacerbated if you have a more upright seating position and are tall. The ms's is a lot shorter than me and has told me the angle on the passenger seat doesn't bother her. just looking at the passenger seat makes me uncomfortable.

since i angled back the drivers seat the entire seat is so much more comfortable, esp lower lumbar and neck.

I thought about doing this, and others have mentioned it in other threads, but have also not carried through with it. I was concerned with snapping the chromed metal legs.

Good mod. I may have to carry through with this.
