will not take fuel

My 2004 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner will not take fuel when I go to the gas station. I have replaced the evap canister and solenoid as well as the overfill check valve on top of the tank. I need help this is driving me crazy as soon as I start putting gas in it the fuel backs up and overflows. Does anyone have any ideas?

 

The breather line on the tank is plugged, most likely. Check the smaller hose above the filler hose for obstructions.

 

this was the problem with my wife's kia. I went to change the EVAP canister, but the replacement I got from AutoZone wasn't the right part. while putting the old one back in,i decided to attach each house to my shop vac.it's been well over 6 months and the car takes gas normally.

I've also heard that the Tacomas have a filter that keeps people from being able to siphon gas out. i'm not sure if the first gen had this, but that could be dirty too.

what happens if you try to put in a gallon at a time? can you add more than if you just hold the handle down until full? or does it only seem to take a small amount and that's it? try putting in a gallon, wait a few seconds and add another gallon, and let us know how that works. also, it's helpful to have someone watch the fuel gauge while doing that.

It will only take a very little gas at the time. I have to go as slow as I can with the gas pump and constantly watch it while doing so. I have already pulled all the hoses off and blew through them no restrictions. Someone told me it could be the rollover flap in the tank causing the problem but I am not sure and do not want to buy a new tank not knowing.

 

that sounds eerily similar. i'm sticking with something is blocked.

try leaving the hoses connected on the other end, and sucking on each evap house with a vacuum

Remember that gasoline is flammable, and electric motors create sparks at their brushes. Using a shop vac to clear vapor recovery hoses seems sketchy.....I suppose if it's on blow instead of vacuum, but still scares me.

 

Have you simply checked the filler? I know Bobert14 had a filling problem because a candy wrapper was in his filler hose...

 

no new updates as of yet I have ordered a used gas tank in hopes it is the rollover valve will update soon

 

seriously? I suppose you don't use your cell phone at the pump either...

that seems extreme, but let's hope it solves it. what are you going to do if that doesn't work?

 

I know of a case where someone had the gas off to his house and was replacing a shutoff valve. While the pipes were open and gas off he turned the shop vac on to clean up a bit inside his crawl space. There was a fire.

Cell phone doesn't bother me. I take the static buildup thing seriously though. There is a reason the fuel tankers ground themselves while filling the underground tanks.

 

There's got to be more to it than that. Plus, a crawl space is a confined area. What I'm suggesting the OP do is outside in an open area. I'm not saying a fire isn't possible, but highly...HIGHLY...unlikely. I generally am on the safe side of things, and the fear of fire never once crossed my mind. I think the OP can do it and be safe.

There's also a reason that computer technicians ground themselves before working on hardware repair. Those tanker guys are dealing with massive amounts of fuel moving at a fast pace. They are in quite a different situation than someone who has a venting issue on a ~20 gallon tank that isn't even full.


I'm sorry, OP. I never intended on this to become a thread jack. OP, have you checked the computer to see if you are throwing any codes? When this happened to my wife's car, we got a code indicating a blocked EVAP canister. I would think that your CEL would have come on, but the CEL burned out in my old Rodeo...might be worth checking.
