This is coming from me....a woman.

You better start agreeing with her, or she's gonna give you 110% responsibility of vacuuming the entire house.

"If you think it's better your way, then have at it....vacuuming is yours - jackass!!"

    LOL

The beater bar's (brush) job is to vibrate the carpet and dirt so the suction can pick it up. It has to hit the carpet with enough force to vibrate it. It doesn't dig in deeper with more force on the bar. Any more that this and it's hard on the belt, motor, and carpet. Too much force reduces the vibration and it doesn't work as well. This is why some higher end vacuum cleaners are self adjusting. The head pivots from the back and raises or lowers depending on the pile of the carpet. They put just the right amount of force for the best vibration.

Now on the other hand look at a Steam Doctor cleaner. The brush vibrates back and forth to penetrate the carpet during cleaning.

(Not to be a "Sheldon" but I use to repair vacuums in a prior life so I know a bit of what I'm talking about.)

Nathan, I recant everything I said.
Whatever Jackie says about anything is correct.

But my wife still agrees with you ;)

No one has said that the vacuum is for carpet only and a BROOM is for the hard floors. Or swifter type product for the hard surfaces. I'm with her if see does it it is her choice. Like driving with someone who ever is driving controls the radio but that's a whole other thread.
