I got a ticket today, specifically a 16028 (a) lack of proof of insurance citation. The LEO said it was a fix it ticket. Has anyone dealt with this type of ticket before? My internet research says varies from $700-1200 fines or possible dismissal with minimal court fees. I just don't know what my next steps are. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Note: I was in the wrong, I made an illegal left turn in front of the LEO. He let that go in favor of just giving me the 16028 (a). I don't want to fight it, i just want to know how to prove I had insurance at the time and then pay my fine/court fees.

    Thanks!

If you have insurance and just didn't have your card with you, then yes... it will be dismissed and you'll have to pay $30 or $40 in court costs.

Your "proof of insurance" card indicates the effective dates of your coverage. I'm looking at mine right now... 10/16/2012 to 10/16/2013. AAA sends two cards. I keep one in my wallet behind my license and the other in the folder in the truck that contains the redacted copy of my registration (photocopy of registration with the address covered).

Yes. I have insurance and I found my new proof cards.

It sounds like I have to goto the court and get this settled. Some places say I can have the clerk dismiss my case other day I need to see the judge. Is there any procedure or am I just going to spend the day at the court house?

Do I just bring my citation and my proof of insurance?

If the officer said it was a fix-it ticket then you could probably go to the court house with your insurance card and have a clerk write down that you do in fact have valid insurance. At least that's the way we do it down here just make sure you get a receipt that say's you were there, that you showed the clerk you card, and have been cleared of any wrong doing. My friend got a fix it ticket for tint and had the court magistrate sign off on it but he forgot to put it in the system, subsequently he had a warrant and APB on his truck for failure to show up for court, got arrested, had his mom bring the ticket from where the magistrate signed it and walked out 10 minutes later with no paper trail of having ever been arrested.

You'll receive a letter in the mail in a few days explaining what you need to do. Usually fix it tickets require any LEO to see your proof of insurance and he'll sign the ticket. Then you'll mail in the signed ticket /paperwork.

I've had this same thing, took the ticket and proof of insurance to the court house and the clerk was able to sign it off. The ticket actually had the code for "fix it" so she told me I could of had any officer or sherif sign it off and they have the mailing address. I paid like 15$ for the filing fee if u see the judge it goes up.

My ticket does not have the "fixable" part checked but on the back it says that a 16028 is dismissible only after proving to the court you had insurance coverage on the date of the citation and you pay your dismissal fines.

I think i understand the whole process and my next steps. I'm just making sure there are no surprises or hidden fees.

Ill need to set aside some time to goto the court and hopefully only need to see the clerk to dismiss my citation. My citation is not online yet to verify all my court info.

Just take a copy of your insurance to the court house wit the ticket. They can walk you through the rest
