Help me decide, Pioneer AVHP 8400 or 4400

I am about to buy a new head unit for my 2010 dbl cab pre-runner and I want to go with a double din unit. I have pretty much narrowed down my selection to one of these two units. Besides the $130'ish price difference, what are the advantages/disadvantages between these two units?

Which one would you buy if the price difference did not matter?

Also, if you wouldn't mind telling me what else I would need for the install. I want a clean look and I want the steering wheel controls integrated as well.

Additionally, I want to upgrade speakers and install an amp at a later time.

Which unit is the best bang for my buck.

Droid actually. I haven't been able to find a decent unit that is compatible with the droid.

 

I'm in the same boat, I have a pioneer that interfaces to my iPhone and it works great. I just bought the new razer Maxx HD. And it dose not interface with my current head unite.

The 4400 model just interfaces music. And is 499 new in most stores the other model. The 8000 something interfaces your maps and other apps. But is priced at 599 and then another 170 for some other shit you need to interface maps and the other apps but its much cleaner looking than the 4400 model.

I know Sony makes a head unite that works with androids too. Just haven't looked in to it

I would say go for the 8400...it has HD radio, much better screen resolution, and built-in bluetooth. Since you're using an Android phone, the only thing you'd be able to do really is play music off of it, so might as well get the blue-tooth and have no wires. I am seeing it on Amazon right now for $469. The 4400 is $360 but if you wanted to go blue-tooth and not have the wires, you'll need a $75 module. So it's about a wash in that sense. Depends on if bluetooth and better screen resolution is worth the $100 to you. It would be to me. Also the faceplate is detachable for the 8400. Don't think that is the case for the 4400

You'll need a few things for installation:
1. Tacoma wiring harness - Scosche TA02B for non JBL,

$70 Axxess TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness, BLACK

Axxess TYTO-01 for JBL
2. Scosche or Metra Dash kit - search the forum for reviews and differences
3. A steering wheel control interface. This can be Metra Axxess or PAC SWI-PS. The Metra is universal to all radios, the PAC is just Pioneer/Sony. Also a
4. Parking Brake ByPass so the DVD player will work while driving for your passengers.

So for non-JBL you'll need an additional $75 or so for installation gear. The JBL harness is expensive so for JBL you'll need an additional $140 or so for gear.


This thread has some more info and opinions - seems to recommend the 4400 more. But I'm sure you'll be pleased either way.

My 4400BH has HD radio and Bluetooth built in...

 

Ah crap...I was thinking 4300 instead of 4400...there's goes my credibility haha

Now I can see why the other forum suggests the 4400. the 8400 is just better resolution and removable faceplate

 

Maybe what you guys need is Pioneer's AppRadio(2). At $600, I don't think it's too bad.

600 ain't bad. Double the price of my phone. But. It does iPhone and DROID

If you are stuck with the Android, you won't be able to appreciate the album art on the high resolution 8400 screen. I don't mean to rub it in, but the Pioneers really have pretty slick integration with Apple products.

I wasn't concerned about the price difference, but still stayed away from the 8400 because I heard so many bad things about App Radio (not to be confused with App Mode on the 4400).

 

I like my 4400 just fine. And saved some coin

 

After a lot of research last night, I think I have decided on a completely different unit.

Think I am going to go with the JVC

Its a pretty sweet unit with Nav built in and does all kind cool shit!

Do you guys know if the same wiring will work on this one? Like for the steering wheel control and parking brake override?

This one is a bit pricey, but it comes with a lot of features and a lifetime subscription to weather, traffic and sports. Which I think is pretty sweet. Also, it will interface somewhat with the droid, like for pandora and I heart radio.

I just don't get why we aren't getting some units out now that interface fully to the droid as they do to the iphone...
