I recently had the fluid changed at the dealership in the rear differential. it is a limited slip. now there is a grinding/rubbing sound that occurs when slowly turning left or right. the dealership said that they used their special lsd fluid that cost like 60 bucks a quart (ouch). I am wondering if i can add a tube of equa torque friction modifier to the toyota lsd fluid to help eliminate the sound. Can you add that fricition modifier to the factory toyota lsd fluid? thanks for any input.

Yes, it's OK. One Toypta tech told me they often add the Ford modifier. It's common for "LS" marked fluids to still need it.

I always use the ford modifier. I was required to do a service with another brand. I didn't want to do the service but was told to do it anyway. About a week later it came back. Did the service again and got the modifier myself because they still didn't want to use the ford stuff. Within 5 miles the problem was gone.
I always use modifier no matter what fluid we have.

I've only used the Ford stuff in my Tacoma, so I can't answer that. I do know the Ford stuff works great. Most likely they are all similar.

do you by any chance have the part number of the specific ford additive?

    1) XL3 LSD Friction Modifier Gear Oil Additive
    2) Ford CM19546A1 Friction Modifier

these are the two i found.

XL3 is not compatable with synthetic oils. I used the other one.

GM has an LSD additive as well. When I get to work on Monday I will see if I can get the part number.

hey, thanks for the input i added the equa torque to the factory gl5 oil from the toyota dealership and the chatter is now gone. funny thing is the dealership never mentioned this is how you fix it, they wanted to sell me a new differential.

Glad to hear that cleared it up. Next time just use a good quality GL5 + additive and save the money. You can get Redline for like $15/quart, or other good oils for a reasonable cost. Welcome to TW :)
