Go to a cabelas/bass pro and buy a ruger 10/22 tomorrow.

Theyre going to have veterans day, employee pricing on shit anyway, and you'll kick yourself for not getting a ruger 10/22

A Ruger 10/22 is a top pick of .22 Rifles. That being said, I have a Marlin Model 60 tube feeder thats going on the better part of 20 years. Only thing that ever went wrong was I had the tube out of it, and leaning in a corner, and it got bent. marlin sent out a brand new replacement tube free of charge! So, their customer service is outstanding.

Get an AR15 with a .22lr conversion bolt. This way you can plink around with the .22lr on the cheap but still have a useful rifle that can shoot 5.56

I always suggest a Henry for any gun. I have a lever action .22 and wouldn't buy anything else. Plus everything Henry is made and assembled in the USA!

If you have the tube feed version, make sure your plunger is going down centered. If you have the regular M60, get different ammo. .22 ammo is cheap, but some of that stuff is horrible. Blazer I think is the worst.

I love my Marlin 60 tube feed, bypass Cali's stupid 10 round law and fire all day! The 795 is just a newer version of the same rifle (without the tube of course)!

I enjoy the crap out of the 10-22's as well. They're equally as fun, but I'm not going to put one over the other, they're just .22's :)

edit: Here's mine and FWIW these stocks are available for Marlin and Ruger alike.

ended up getting the Marlin on the day after thanksgiving from Dick's sporting goods:

was about $120 before tax (marked down from 170). Felt bad for the employees, I was in there at midnight to buy and after waiting for about 45 minutes, the manager comes out and tells everyone that they can't sell any until after 6am. The hotline for the background checks was closed until then. They took everyone's phone numbers after we made our selections and called us later in the morning...still managed to get some buy one get one half off ammo in the meantime :D

    now to get a scope....
