    I did...

    Sounds like to me from the links and the research I did earlier, that I can use my state enhanced drivers license and not a passport if I want to travel by land or sea to Canada.

    You could , but the OP is in California and they don't have enhanced driver's licenses , so he needs a passport

    Unless he has a Nexus or enhanced tribal card etc

    For land, train and sea travel between canada, mexico PR you can get a passport card, which is slightly cheaper, and is the size of your liscense. The application for a passport has the option to get both or just one or the other. I think to add the card is another 20 bucks or so. I have both, and used the card for a recent cruise I went on.
