about 3 weeks ago I picked up a LEER 180 for my Tacoma in the Indigo Blue color. My truck being a MGM I want to get it painted. There is some damage on the canopy on both of the front corners where the prior owner dinged them on the concrete. You can see the fiberglass, but it doesn't seem that bad. I wanted to get estimates on repairing the corners and painting so I went to Maaco today and the guy said that the corners HAVE to be repaired or the paint would start bubbling as water penetrated the fiberglass. The thing is those corners have been like that for over a year and the canopy has been stored outside in the elements with no paint bubbles. They quoted me $190 for the repairs and another $235 for paint.

The question I have is: am I okay with just painting the the canopy or should I get the the damage repaired too? I bought the canopy for $400 so I don't feel like paying more for paint/repair than I did for it in the first place. I've attached photos of the damage below...you'll see that it's not that bad.

Stay away from Maaco this is where guys that can't get a job at any other body shop work. Those corners would take a good body man about 10 minutes to fix.

That's what I've always heard about maaco...this particular shop did have good reviews tho. Kind of shocking. I expected just as you said Tripps that the corners would be a quick fix. The estimator actually said 4 hours for the corners at first before I said no way it would take that long. I guess this is why you always get three quotes.

If you wanted you could sand the corners and round them off a little yourself and reseal the fiberglass with new resin kit from lowes then have it painted. The fiberglass resin and hardener from lowes is less than $20 bucks.

That's what I figured it would take, just a few simple steps. I have another estimate here in about an hour....if that number is more reasonable I'll go with them. Otherwise I'll do the sanding/resin work and just go for a paint job.

I would think a true body shop is going to charge you more but I would definitely get it fixed before painting it. Also, MAACO will most likely mask and tape up the windows before shooting it. I would suggest finding a shop that will remove the windows. It may cost a little more but you will get a better product.
